Y Society "Puzzles"

Hip-Hop artists from my home-state of Massachusetts, particularly the Boston contingent, represented something lovely last year. Cats like Esoteric, Nite People, and Raheem Jamal all released albums ranging in quality from classic to solid. And when Boston ex-pat Insight teamed up with D.C.-based DJ/producer Damu the Fudgemunk as Y Society late in the year he dropped an album, 'Travel at Your Own Pace,' which joined Eso's 'Egoclapper' in the "classic" category and was dope enough to make me not mad that it wasn't a callabo with Edan on the beats. When it comes to sample-based, boom-bap Rap only artists from the Midwest were giving Beantown a run for their money in '07, and very few of them did it as dope as these kids.

Kid Acne "Sliding Doors"

Were you mad that the Beastie Boys' 'The Mix Up' was an all-instrumental band album? Were you hoping they'd make a return to that progressive Hip-Hop sound they were working on 'Hello Nasty' instead? Yeah, me too. That's why I'm feeling 'Romance Ain't Dead,' the recent Lex Records release from Soutj Yorks, UK-based emcee Kid Acne so much. It's rowdy, and Rock-influenced, but the beats have a chunky old-school feel.

Speech Defect "Blast Off From Kicksville"

With all the Swedish Indie-Pop I listen to I've often found myself wondering why there isn't and underground Hip-Hop coming out of Sweden. I've posited the notion that much like that country's Pop, their Hip-Hop would somehow be more pure than that released here in the states. When I got a copy of Swedish Rap crew Speech Defect's backpack extravaganza 'Come for da Funeral, Stay for da Food' my hypothesis was proven totally correct. These cats make the same kind of fun, sample-based Hip-Hop that dudes like Ugly Duckling, P.U.T.S., Time Machine and the like have done such a good job of making the last few years. Oh, and they also rap about sneakers.

Lupe Fiasco "Gold Watch"

I don't care how much you and your "Hip-Hop Scholar" friends (who were probably all toddlers when A Tribe Called Quest released 'Midnight Marauders') want to hate on Chicago's Lupe Fiasco, the dude knows how to rap, picks dope beats, and makes good records. He's pretty much everything that all the other major label rappers aren't. Granted, that could be summed up in one word... dope... but it's more complicated than that. His new album 'The Cool' is the solid sophomore record he needed, even if it is over-long, less than spectacularly sequenced, and bogged down by ill-advised guest-spots. But it's still better than most of the albums the rappers you like put out this year, so shut up.

Wow, amazing artwork on all three album covers. I wonder if the music is just as good. I'm almost tempted to assume that it is.

Y Society is just more proof that hip-hop is alive and well. Another great one along those lines is Blu & Exile's "Below the Heavens". As for Lupe, this is probably the seventh time that I've read that The Cool is at least better than the other major hip-hop releases. Well, considering the absolute styrofoam peanuts that mainstream radio supports nowadays, this is not at all impressive. Lupe's first album is an absolute classic (imo) but The Cool sounds like watered down fluff. Yes, it does sound different but that is not always a good thing as anyone who owns a copy of MC Paul Barman's lp already knows.
