Kings Go Forth

Freshly signed to David Byrne's Luaka Bop label, ten-piece Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based retro-Soul orchestra Kings Go Forth just dropped a Tom Moulton-mixed 12'' in preparation for their forthcoming debut LP!

The single, titled “Don't Take My Shadow,” is a big, rumbling slice of sophisticated symphonic Soul made in the mold of the output of the Philadelphia International label or latter-era Isaac Hayes.

You can check out the LP cut “One Day,” an uptempo, percussive Midwestern Funk fire-starter with honeyed vocals in the tradition of Chicago Soul legend Curtis Mayfield and his Curtom Records label, right now via the download link below.

“Don't Take My Shadow” is out now on 12'' vinyl and as a digital download, and will be followed up by the release of their ten-track debut album ‘The Outsiders are Back’ on April 20th, both on Luaka Bop Records.

Why? and Amp Live ‘One Dark Eskimo Remixes’

If, like me, you were underwhelmed by the middle-of-the-road Indie-Rock sound of Berkley-based Avant-Hop trio WHY?'s most recent LP ‘Eskimo Snow’ you should dig this.

It's a free five-track EP of decidedly Hip-Hop-flavored remixes of ‘Eskimo Snow’ album cuts from fellow Bay Area artist and Zion I beatmaker Amp Live titled ‘One Dark Eskimo!

WHY? and Amp Live ‘One Dark Eskimo’ (.ZIP)

You can still find WHY?'s ‘Eskimo Snow’ in stores now on the anticon. recording label. Amp Live's solo debut ‘Murder at the Discotech’ is due out March 16th via the Child's Play label.

“Marlene” is the catchy-as-fuck, Cars-meets-Country first single from Lightspeed Champion's forthcoming sophomore LP ‘Life is Sweet! Nice to Meet You.

Here's the hallucinatory video.

The “Marlene” single drops January 25th, followed by Life is Sweet! Nice to Meet You on February 15th, both on the Domino Records label.

My iPod likes to play “It Can All Be Taken Away,” a tune by MC Paul Barman with filmmaker Michel Gondry on piano and optigan, when I'm standing at the bus stop waiting for the bus to my crappy retail job at five in the morning.

It usually makes me cry.

Thanks iPod.

“It Can All Be Taken Away” is the closing track from MC Paul Barman's “tempting fall bargain” of a long-awaited sophomore LP ‘Thought Balloon Mushroom Cloud.

It's one of the best Hip-Hop albums that dropped last year, and is still one of the best Hip-Hop albums of this year.

And yes, Gondry made the video.

Joe Kickass ‘Let Me Introduce EP’

German indie Hip-Hop imprint Project Mooncircle debuts their newest signing, a Dutch graphic artist, emcee and beatmaker who goes by the attention-commanding moniker Joe Kickass, with a free downloadable EP titled ‘Let Me Introduce.

Kickass possesses a raspy, Method Man-esque baritone, an infatuation with mid-‘90s Rap, and an ear for post-RZA-style production that should endear his music to anybody who misses the late-nineties era of Wu-Elements-fueled Wu-Tang Killer Bee expansion.

Minneapolis, Minnesota-based Dessa is a singer, an emcee, a spoken-word poet, and a member of Imageyenation dandy P.O.S.'s clique Doomtree. “Dixon's Girl,” with its slick-but-creepy Todd Cobery-directed video clip, is the first single from her debut LP 'A Badly Broken Code.'

'A Badly Broken Code' is out January 19th on Doomtree Records.

Signifire ‘You Get What You Pay For’

Longtime listeners of our now defunct Urban Alternatives radio show might remember a cut called “The Blakes Have Got New Faces” from Jailbeat Productions which featured emcees Signifire and John Blake rapping over Vampire Weekend's “One (Blake's Got a New Face).”

Signifire finally follows that outstanding guest-shot up with a 10-track mixtalbum, featuring some production from Jailbeat's Chris Renne and vocal contributions from Shameless Plug, Renne's partner in Hip-Hop/Powerpop group The Yes Yes Yalls, titled ‘You Get What You Pay For.

It's also got the aforementioned Vampire Weekend rework on it, as well as a joint jacking a track from Western Pennsylvania's resident forest-dwelling proponents of breakbeat-backed Prog and Pysch-Rock, Black Moth Super Rainbow!

Even though the calendar just flipped to a new year and a new decade Brooklyn's PackFM just isn't seeing a whole lot of significant change or progress being made.

He enumerates a number of his beefs with our complacent, some might say counter-evolutionary, society over a rumbling Tonedeff-produced beat on his new digi-single “Happy Days.”

Things have been so bad and people are so eager to just be satisfied that they lowered their standards for everything, but we can do better than that. Its like if a kid scrapes his knee and you give him a lolipop, he stops crying, but at some point you're going to have to fix that wound. – PackFM

Thom Glunt directs the video for “Let There Be Horns,” the opening track from RJD2's forthcoming self-released fourth LP ‘The Colossus, out January 10th on RJ's Electrical Connections.

“Let There Be Horns” should not be confused with the first single from the album, a tune titled “Games You Can Win, featuring the vocal talents of Star Trak recording artist Kenna.

Isaiah Toothtaker ‘YIGGY’

Heavily tattooed Tuscon, Arizona-based emcee Isaiah Toothtaker has one of the illest monikers and one of the illest mustaches a rapper's ever had.

He's also got a pretty nasty flow, which he flexes all over beats from the likes of Subtitle, Megasoid, Meaty Ogre and Eligh on his new free digital LP ‘YIGGY.

Dude comes off sorta like Nuk Fam member Tone Tank, if he grew out of the Good Life Café/Project Blowed scene instead of the New York Punk and Hip-Hop undergrounds.

Blu ‘theGODleeBarnesLP’

Having a Twitter account finally payed off in 2010 when L.A.-based emcee/producer Blu (a.k.a. GODleeBarnes) used the 140-character bane of my existence to drop a new record.

The release in question is a 22-track collection of largely self-produced (Exile produced one cut) tracks (presented as one long 70-minute MP3) dating back to 2007 titled ‘theGODleeBarnesLP.

Shit is grimy, on some “demo tape dubbed onto a warped cassette” steez, and it's every bit as dope as you'd expect anything from Blu to be.
