It seems like just yesterday Scott Herren released 'Golden Pollen' under his moniker Savath & Savalas, but here he is again, coming out with a second album this year, this time as Prefuse 73!
Scheduled for an October 23 release under Warp Records, Prefuse's fifth full-length album 'Preparations' was just leaked online but fans should still be picking up a hard copy for the bonus disc 'Ensembles', which sounds like it'll be pretty interesting. In an interview with Pitchfork, Herren said "One side of the record is totally beats, and [on] the other side, I'm notating the beats, and they all sound like modern classical music. I feel like half the kids that buy it are just going to throw the other CD away and keep the beat side. I don't know what to expect."
I gotta admit, I'm not much of a Savath & Savalas fan, nor did I particularly enjoy Prefuse's last record 'Security Screenings', but 'Preparations' is pretty solid. Actually, scratch that, it's GOOD - mellow and exciting at the same time.
"Class of 73 Bells" is slated to be the first single and features the new band School of Seven Bells. You may recognize the vocalists, Claudia and Alejandra Deheza from previous Prefuse and Savath & Savalas collaborations. And for your random fact of the day, Claudia is also Herren's baby mamma and partner on side project A Cloud Mireya.
British rappers The Mitchell Brothers new single is a dedication to the King of Pop Michael Jackson, whose name is actually the title of the song. Calvin Harris produced the track and even appears in the video.
The guy in the video's dedication to the King is amazing.
The dark and moody duo She Wants Revenge have just put up the video for their new song "Written in Blood" on YouTube. It's a dark and twisted tale and probably isn't suitable for you to play at work.
She Wants Revenge's new album This Is Forever comes out on October 9th, 2007
I feel like I'm a little late on this. Talib Kweli has a new video for his single "Hot Thing". The video, which will stimulate your ears and eyes, also has a bit of his track "In The Mood" as well. Funny that the single is from his new album 'Ear Drum.'
This sort of reminds me a lot of the HP Commercials that Jay-Z, Pharrell and Shaun White were in.
Sharon Jones has been an idol of mine for some time now. She's a fiesty, take-no-crap kinda lady. And I respect that. Recently, her back up band The Dap Kings were sort of bogarted by Amy Winehouse. But never fear. They are back behind their shining star and are coming out with a new album '100 Days, 100 Nights', which will be released on October 2nd.
For your enjoyment, here's the title track off the album
"Barry Bonds" is the fourth song from Kanye's 'Graduation' to find its way onto the Internets It features everyone's favorite guest rapper Lil' Wayne. This track doesn't really live up to "Can't Tell Me Nothing" or "Stronger" (though I could be wrong), but it's definitely worth a listen as the beat is pretty sick.
New Orleans Hip Hop artist Jay Electronica put up a video to his song "Hard To Get" (ft. Mr. Porter) on YouTube. Similar to Akala's "Electro Livin'" or Guru's "State of Clarity", the video basically takes scenes from an old flim and makes them fit the song. This time, the movie happens to be the 1982 futuristic classic Tron.
Here's a little bio about him from the SXSW Festival.
British band The Go! Team just put up their new video for their next single "Doing It Right". It is the second video from The Go! Team's upcoming release Proof of Youth, which should be dropping some time in September.
Ok, ok, so maybe Robin Thicke is also really great.
The leaked video for 50 Cent's second third single "Follow My Lead" features both the great Dustin Hoffman (as Fiddy's personal shrink/hypnotherapist) as well as the Lady Glock favorite Robin Thicke. 50 Cent as a ladies man, however, does not work.
Fiddy is apparently none too pleased that this video was released so early. If you ask me though...I think he planned it. Let's hope that in the battle of Kanye vs 50 Cent, Kanye wins. Then maybe 50 will retire.
For their slightly bizarre but absolutely awesome single "The Salmon Dance", The Chemical Brothers have an even more bizarre but still awesome video. The track features Fatlip who, in this case, becomes the voice of a very chilled out piranha.
I forsee a slew of videos on YouTube where people will be doing their best interpretations of "The Salmon Dance". I wonder if it'll be the next "Wu-Tang" or perhaps even the next "Spongebob Squarepants".
"The Salmon Dance" is off of the Chemical Brothers recent Astralwerks release We Are The Night
Oh man, Lady Glock already beat me to a post about M.I.A. today, but I've been banging this song all day and need to share.
Didgeridoos? They kind of freak me out.
The sound of children's voices? Also kind of freak me out. Especially when they sound like they smoke a pack a day. And like they might kill you if you ever stumble upon their secret hideout in the Amazon where they live all 'Lord of the Flies'-like.
But put them together and throw in a little cutie M.I.A. and you end up with the awesomeness of "Mango Pickle Down River". Who knew?!
"Jimmy", the most recent single to come off of M.I.A.'s upcoming album Kala, now has a video to go along with it. In a Bollywood-inspired frenzy, M.I.A. gets decked out in an amazing gold frock. She even has matching nails!
In other words, M.I.A looks fierce.
Wait, I take that back. She looks FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEERRRRCCCE.
Despite the super-low-budget, straight to YouTube look of the video, and the recycling of Flavor Flav's ad-libs from 20 years ago I don't mind Public Enemy's new single "Harder Than You Think" at all.
The RJD2-esque soulful horn schtick, which is something I was saying P.E. needed to get up on a few years back, is a nice touch. But it's weird that such a groundbreaking group always seems a few steps behind. I can't help but wonder how different the trajectory of their career would've been up until now had they hit up Pete Rock for an album's worth of beats after he remixed "Shut 'Em Down" in '91.
When I first watched New Zealand band Evermore's video for their latest single "Never Let You Go", two of my favorite words came to my mind: "context" and "juxtaposition". For the video, directors Spencer Susser and Nash Edgerton took the "found art" approach and used a large amount of stock footage clips, each one correlating to a different lyric. Just so I can use my two favorite words again, the footage, though completely taken out of its original context, suddenly takes on a completely new meaning when juxtaposed with the song. The end result is a really cool and at times moving interpretation of a pop love song.
"Never Let You Go" is the fourth single released off of Evermore's 'Real Life.'
I would really like some cookies right now. Sadly, there are no cookies anywhere in my vicinity. So, I guess I'll have to make do with the cookies the girls from Indie-Pop keyboard band Au Revoir Simone make in the video for their tune "Sad Song." And no, I didn't find the video by randomly searching for the word "cookies" on the internets.
Their album, 'The Bird of Music' has been out since forever ago (or some time in May, to be precise) and can still be found for sale in stores everywhere on the Our Secret Records label. Go get it kids!
I really fucking hate 50 Cent. But the Timbaland produced beat and Justin Timberlake chorus on his new single "Ayo Technology" are fucking stellar. And the video (when 50's face isn't in it at least) is spectacularly sexy! JT got a long distance orgasm machine son!
This song would be perfect if 50 Cent weren't on it. His voice and flow just sound wrong on it. And his rhymes are mad clumsy and poorly recorded and mixed compared to JT and Timmy who fit into the "technologic" theme and sound of the track. Just hang it up Fiddy!
Chicago-based emcee Serengeti is one of my favorite African Americans with a Jewish last name since Whoopie Goldberg. He's also one of my favorite Rap guys out right now. And he's ridiculously prolific too. 'Don't Give Up,' a collaborative effort with producer Polyphonic (of Juba Dance), is his third album of the year so far! It's easily one of the best Hip-Hop albums of 2007. I picked the song "Lately I Haven't Been Feeling Well" because lately I haven't been feeling well. I also like the ping-pongy electronic beat from Polyphonic and Serengeti's storytelling lyrics and sung vocals.
North Carolina-bred, now California-based duo Brother Reade is something of an anachronism. I was kind of expecting them to make Hipster-Hop, but that's not the case. Vocally they're very North Carolina. Production-wise they're really Dilla-esque. As their album title suggests they really do just make 'Rap Music,' plain and simple. I picked the cut "The Loft Party Classics" because of it's titular allusion to classic Dance music, which the song itself has absolutely nothing to do with. But the beat knocks, and the rhymes are cool, so it's okay.
Hailing from Winnipeg, Canada, Grand Analog is out to corner the Rap meets Rock meets Dub meets Soul market dominated by fellow Canuck K-Os for the last few years. If you're into the sort of thing, and I don't see why you wouldn't be, his album 'Calligraffiti' is a must buy. The track "Mixtapes" is some outer-space Dub versus Trip-Hop shit with a heavy bassline and wonky synths. It reminded me of The Nonce's classic "Mixtapes" even though it's a really different kind of song. And Grand Analog's interpolation of a couple of Extra-P's lines from Main Source's classic "Just Hangin' Out" is pretty precious.
Former Imageyenation point man and occasional contributor Cereffsion is a huge C-Rayz fan. He doesn't like this album at all. He can suck it though, 'cause it's good stuff. It finds the Bronx-bred emcee teaming with DC-based DJ and producer Sharkey under the Monster Maker moniker, doing a mashup of Rap, Rock, Electronica and more. "My Way" was one of the first Monster Maker songs I heard via that promo video they released early in the year. The stomping beat, spitfire raps from C-Rayz and Sharkey's hook crooning still hold up.
