Little Wings "Saturday"

What am I listening to here? An America tribute record? No, it's Portland, Oregon-based Indie-Pop guy Little Wings getting all soulfully Emo on some '70s Wuss-Rock shit. That's pretty much what he does throughout his new "almost short enough to be an EP" album 'Soft Pow'r,' which is out now via the Marriage Records subsidiary RAD Records. Seriously though, "Saturday" is the type of song only a guy with long, feathered hair and a beard should be singing. If I find out this Little Wings guy doesn't look like that I'm gonna be pissed!

...Music Video? "For the Sake of Argument I Disagree"

I've been "friends" with this Arizona-based Emotronica dude called ...Music Video? on MySpace for a while. Like so many MySpace bands who send me friend requests I never thought I'd actually hear a record by him. So, it's a nice surprise to actually be posting a song from his new record 'Now That My TV Has Wings I'll Never Be Alone' here on Imageyenation. He's kinda got a post-modern Power-Pop Aqueduct sort of thing going on, but more electronicy I guess. The track "For the Sake of Argument I Disagree" sounds something like Postal Service versus some Houston Rap shit.

My Little Airport "You Don't Want to Be My Girlfriend, Phoebe"

Forget J-Pop, yo! Co-ed duo My Little Airport is all about that HK Pop! That's right, they're a kitschy electronic Pop act, and they're from Hong Kong. The lyrics are in English and Chinese, and they're weird. The soundscapes are lo-fi, synthy, and very pretty. I guess they've had a couple of albums out, neither of which were widely available here in the states, so Elefant Records compiled a bunch of tracks from they previous efforts and a couple of new ones and called it 'Zoo Is Sad, People are Cruel.' Me likey. Especially "You Don't Want to Be My Girlfriend, Phoebe," because a cute Asian girl singing about another girls' breasts over toy keyboards is utterly irresistible.

Amélie "Island Girl"

I don't know what kind of accent this girl Amélie is supposed to have, but whatever it is it's enchanting. She's French, so I suppose it's supposed to be a French accent, but it doesn't sound like any French accent I've ever heard. Reminds me more of Björk. Anyway, her album, 'The Real Nature of the Fantastic Ice Cream Car,' just might have the best title of any record release this year. And the music, largely composed of airy Folk-Pop, is pretty damn good too! I was gonna post the tune "Forgotten Christmas Gift," but I thought posting a song about Christmas in the middle of the fucking Summer would be stupid. So I went with "Island Girl," a stripped-down duet between her and her background vocalist Vincent Dupas instead.

Canadian/London band Dragonette have done a cover of Calvin Harris' hit single "The Girls". Except lead singer Martina doesn't sing about girls, she sings about all the different boys she likes. And she likes all of them. Including the "scrawny, Scottish, into Pop music, but not like sort of Pop, dance, Electro music" boys.

Imageyenation favorite Kid Sister has been adding a little of that Chicago Juke flavor to her tunes here and there. But so far the underground dance scene, whose roots stretch back far beyond Hip-Hop and House, hasn't broken on a national level. If more acts like Dude N Nem release records as dope as "Watch My Feet" that's sure to change really soon though. This shit is a dance anthem!

Dude N Nem "Watch My Feet"

Not only is the song fresh to death, but some of the kids in this clip really get down! And maybe it's just me, but it's quite refreshing to hear a Hip-Hop "dance" song that's actually danceable for a change.

Like electro-rap loving Virgina Woolfs, San Francisco's All Teeth and Knuckles make strangely stream of consciousness club songs about the ephemeral and fragile nature of adult relationships clubbing. On their forthcoming album "Club Hits to Hit the Clubs With", out August 7th on Pish Posh records, Gio Fo'Rio lays down some synth beats over which Sick Face Fallon waxes bare-bones about what seems like a love-hate relationship with the San Francisco club scene.

From the first time he met Lovefoxxx of CSS at Mezzanine to the time he was outside the Hemlock and surrounded by douchebags in leather jackets, Fallon lays out the stories of his nights in a near mundane level of detail that makes it hard to tell how tongue-in-cheeck it all is. I wasn't sure how I felt about ATAK at first but you know what, they're pretty funny and it's a party.

Fineprint "Repeat This"

Gritty but fun-loving live band Rap from Canada has a name, and it's name is Fineprint! The Toronto-based trio, comprised of Astonish, San Miguel, and Stutter, get stupid-soulful on their debut self-titled album, with live instrumentation, dirty beats, lo-fi recording techniques and witty raps. "Repeat This" gives me a sort of Madvillian type of vibe, while hearkening back to the days of Biz Markie's most dusted joints, and the sweet Soul of Stax Records.

Camp Lo "Soul Fever"

I played "Soul Fever," one of my favorite cuts from Camp Lo's new album 'Black Hollywood,' last night on Urban Alternatives radio. It sparked a convo between me and Emeyesi about how amazing Geechi Suede and Sonni Chiba are now, and how amazing they've been ever since their debut in the late '90s. The fact that they're still making records, and still doing them a decade into their career is fucking awesome! And yes, longtime collaborator Ski is still doing the beats.

Major League "Ooooooh!"

Like Camp Lo beatsmith Ski, emcees Etc. and Mnemonic, and beatmaker Coreio of Major League are from North Carolina. Some of the tracks on their new album 'Opening Day' bear a likeness to Ski's signature sophisticated Soul loops, while others are more similar to 9th Wonder's neo-Primo soulful boom-bap style. Lyrically and vocally they have a definite Little Brother/Justus League thing going on. "Oooooh!" is one of the buttery selections that made me think of Camp Lo, if you replaced Suede and Chiba with Phonte and Big Pooh.

Common "Drivin' Me Wild" feat. Lily Allen

Big-name Rap has kinda sucked this year. Which is why I've been waiting for Common to drop 'Finding Forever' for months. Thankfully he and his boy Kanye (and the other contributors, like producers J Dilla, will.i.am, and Devo Springsteen, and guest-vocalists Lily Allen, Bilal, Dwele, and D'Angelo) don't disappoint. I wasn't sure what to expect of Com and Ye's collaboration with UK-based baby-faced bad-girl Lily Allen, but "Drivin' Me Wild" turned out pretty freakin' sweet! And is it just me, or did Kanye freak "Les Fluer" for the beat?

The animated airbrush murals on the pizza vans in the long-awaited video for Chromeo's "Tenderoni" are almost as inventive as the animated hipster tee-shirts in Justice's "D.A.N.C.E." video. It's just a little weird seeing Pee Thugg & Dave 1 driving all around what looks like Los Angeles knowing they're from the frozen tundra of Canada.

Chromeo's just as long-awaited sophomore album 'Fancy Footwork' is available in stores now on the Vice Records label. And just because I'm a nice guy, here's the brand new MSTRKRFT remix of "Tenderoni."

West London rapper Example has been getting some attention from some big name UK Hip Hoppers. Not bad for a white boy from Fulham.

Born Elliot Gleave (get it? His initials are E.G.), Example originally started his career MCing in the Garage scene, but then decided to "find himself" in Australia. When he finally did return to London, he had high aspriations of becoming a full fledged professional rapper. After starting his own label, "All The Chats" and releasing a few singles, he got some airplay from Radio One DJ Pete Tong. He also caught the attention of The Streets' Mike Skinner, who signed him to his The Beats label in April 2006.

In Novemeber, 2006, Example released his first single off of The Beats entitled "What We Made". He filmed the video in Chernobyl, Ukraine and while filming, made a short documentary about some of the abandoned and unlivable towns he visited.

Not all his songs are so serious though. His second single "You Can't Rap" (which was released earlier this year) is Example taking the piss out of himself for being a white rapper. In his re-released track "I Don't Want To", he describes the bad things that can happen on a one night stand. He even did a remix of Lily Allen's hit song "Smile" but changed the lyrics so they were from the perspective of the guy Lily dumps.

Currently on tour with The Streets, The Mitchell Brothers and Professor Green, Example's full length studio album What We Made will be released sometime this September.

Below you can check out his video for "I Don't Want To" as well as his track "You Can't Rap".

Artist Sia, formerly of Zero 7 fame, proves in the video for her new single "Buttons" that you don't need a makeup artist to make your face look all kinds of crazy. Plastic wrap, fishnets and clear tape will do just fine.

The single is off her upcoming album, Some People Have Real Problems which will perhaps be released sometime later this year, though I can't seem to find an actual official release date. You can check out more of her new music on her site or at her MySpace page.

The always offensive, always creative, and always awesome Art-Rap meets Sleaze-Rap crew Plastic Little have given birth to a brand new video for the track "Dopeness" from their 'She's Mature' album.

One of the most ridiculous, and ridiculously dope, records of the year, 'She's Mature' is still available in stores on the Tonearm Records label.

Folktronica guy Dan Snaith, a.k.a. Caribou, isn't Swedish, but the new video clip for his new single "Melody Day" was filmed in Sweden.

The new Caribou album 'Andorra,' which is a masterpiece of 1960's style Pop music, hits store shelves August 21st on Domino Records.

Eclectic UK Dance music DJ/production duo Elektrons offer a nice supplement to Summertime dancefloor favorites from the likes of the Chemical Brothers, Armand Van Helden, Justice, Chromeo, and Simian Mobile Disco. Their new single "Get Up," featuring vocals by Paul Simpson and Soup of Jurassic 5, blends Disco, Electro, Soul, Hip-Hop, and House, and has a really trippy animated video clip.

The "Get Up" single drops as a digital download on July 30th, and on CD and 12'' vinyl formats August 6th. Their full-length LP, 'Red Light Don't Stop' hits stores on August 20th, via the Wall of Sound label.

Aussie posse Architecture of Helsinki flexes their Art-Punk meets Funk-Punk muscles, as well as their leg muscles, in the brand new video clip for "Hold Music," from their super-awesome forthcoming album 'Places Like This,' due out August 7th on Polyvinyl Records.

The song really, really, really reminds me of the Talking Heads in a very big way. And I think I'm way more psyched about it than I am the trampoline-filled video. Regardless, the album's a must-buy.

The Brooklyn, New York based, fifteen member, Disco-Funk collective Escort gives Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem a run for their Muppet money in the video for their single "All Through the Night."

There's a remix of the track on the 12'' by The Rapture, which has been Emeyesi's choice when he's played the song on Urban Alternatives, but for my money the original is the better version.

I have no idea why it took as long as it has for a video to surface for one of the tracks from RJD2's 'The Third Hand' LP. But this clip for standout track "Work It Out," featuring Bill Shannon, a gentleman who was born with a degenerative hip condition who has lived his life on crutches and developed interesting ways to get around, is both artfully crafted, and pretty fucking inventive. Dude gets awesome.

RJD2's 'The Third Hand,' which longtime RJD2 fanboy Cereffusion hated, but me and Emeyesi liked quite a bit, is still available in stores, on the XL Records label. And if you're ever presented with the opportunity, don't hesitate to see RJ and his band live. They kill!

House music legend Armand Van Helden time-warps to 1992 for the new video clip for his track "I Want Your Soul." For some reason the costumes in faux 1992 all look like they belong in faux 1989 instead. But whatever's clever. It's one of the minimal but catchy, throwback '80s Club meets Electro-House jams from his new album 'Ghettoblaster.' Also there's lots of fashionable, sexy babes in the clip.

The 'Ghettoblaster' LP, featuring guest spots from Fat Joe (on a House track, seriously), Kudu, Roxy Cottontail, Lacole "Tigga" Campbell, and others, is available in stores now on Southern Fried Records.

I'd say 'Flight of the Conchords' Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement are brilliant rappers. So since it's "Hip-Hop Thursday" I thought I'd share one of my favorite new singles by Hiphopopotamus, Clement, and Rhymenoceros, McKenzie.

Ill Poetic "So Good"

Wanna hear some WRAP from Cincinatti? Are you too young to get the reference my old-ass just made? Regardless, Ohio's Ill Poetic represents lovely for the state that's round on the ends and high in the middle on his new record 'The World is Ours.' It features a bunch of choice cuts, a bevy of self-produced knockers, and guest shots from Blueprint and Illogic. But I'm particularly fond of the feel-good raps, New Age Jazz samples and neo-Ummah boom-clap beats on "So Good."

Talib Kweli "Electrify"

I admit it, I have sort of a love/hate relationship with rapper Talib Kweli. I loved Blackstar. I was sort of disappointed with Reflection Eternal. His 'Quality' LP had it's moments though, and benefited from the production acumen of an ascendant Kanye West. But then he tried remaking "Get By" with Kanye on his next record and dropped the ball despite having Mr. West, Just Blaze, and The Neptunes backing him on a few joints. The stuff he's released since, a few "mixtapes," the joint with Madlib, purported leaks and promo singles for 'Eardrum' have been hit-and-miss. As it turns out, 'Eardrum' has its share of misses, but there are plenty of hits too. And the hits all hit pretty hard. With beats from Kanye, Just Blaze, Madlib, Dilla, and Pete Rock, could we expect any less? Well yeah, I guess we probably could. But we probably shouldn't. And Kweli and co. show and prove why we shouldn't. "Electrify" is the official Pete Rock banger.

Caveman Theory "To the Top"

Florida doesn't get a lot of respect in the Hip-Hop world. But that could change soon if more "true-school" oriented acts like Orlando based quartet Caveman Theory drop records like their 'The Stone Quartet' album. I've actually been listening to group-member Godamus Rhyme's beats for years, as he was a longtime participant on the beatmakers board at the now defunct Hip Hop Infinity website. So it's pretty sweet seeing a dude I've watched come up doing good. And good is exactly what Caveman Theory's music is. Case in point, "To the Top," with it's ethereal vocal samples, raw drums, precise scratches, and "ain't nobody gonna hold me down" raps.

Nite People "BIG"

Though I don't know him that well, Nite People producer Tone Capone is another acquaintance of mine. As it so happens, I met him at a Talib Kweli concert at the Palladium in Worcester a few years back. The 'Daily Livin' LP finds he and partner E the Real representing our home state of Massachusetts with straight forward, raw, Hip-Hop in the boom-bap tradition. I'm seriously impressed with what these guys are doing. And not just because I have a face-to-face connection with them. But because it's always nice seeing "hometown" boys come correct. Standout album track "BIG" features Tone's ambient samples, horn and flute loops, and rock-hard drums as a backdrop for E's literally realist raps about the pitfalls of trying to "make it big."

I've been anticipating UK Grime dude Kano's sophomore LP pretty tough since I saw the live video of him playing "Me and My Microphone" with Kate Nash a few months ago. I was kinda hoping he'd put that out as the first single. Instead he released a syrupy jam called "This is the Girl" with Craig David's auto-tuned croonery on the chorus. It kinda sounds like some Rap song featuring Boyz II Men that would've been on American radio in the mid-to-late '90s.

The "This is the Girl" single, featuring Craig Daid, drops on August 20th. And the album, 'London Town,' featuring Damon Albarn, Kate Nash, Vybes Kartel, Leo The Lion, and Craig Daivd, will follow on September 3rd. Both releases come courtesy of 679 Recordings.

You may be aware that sometimes Imageyenation movie review guy, erstwhile television show host, shoe buyer, school teacher, Fort Wayne resident, and award-winning rapper Sankofa and I have been working on his third solo full length, titled 'The Tortoise Hustle' for what feels like a couple of years now. You might have even heard a taste of our work together when "They All Die" appeared on a special music CD included with an issue of 'ESOPUS' magazine. Well, you're about to taste a whole lot more, because 'The Tortoise Hustle' is finally recorded, mixed-down, mastered, and shipped off to the pressing plant, and its release is imminent! Want proof? Here's a sexy promotional snippet reel featuring bits and pieces of the dopeness.

Dope, right? Right... And it gets a lot doper! In case you didn't catch it in the video, 'The Tortoise Hustle' is a limited pressing of professionally pressed CDs (nope, not CDRs), hand-numbered, and packaged in special hand-embossed tins, with "Cracker Jack prizes" included in every tin! There's also a rumour that there might be another, even more limited run, of digipak "Imageyenation edition" discs with totally different artwork, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Right now, you need to go to his MySpace and shoot Sankofa a message telling him what number CD (do you have a lucky number perhaps?) you want to reserve so you can be in line for your own very special hand-numbered copy when they roll off the presses!

Oh, you might also want to watch this, it's another promotional clip, this time for "Shiny," one of the album's many El Keter produced tunes. It was conceived quite some time ago, but as events unfolded, it became more and more relevent. You'll see what I mean.

And if you absolutely need me to give you the hard-sell, some of the things you absolutely need to know about the record include... Limited edition of 250 numbered CD tins... 16 full-length tracks... Beats on 13 of those tracks by me, El Keter... Beats on the other 3 by Ognihs, Mic.Dagger, and Sankofa... 10 different rappers... Those rappers include Rhymewise37, Jon?Doe, Athena, Kashal-Tee, Nick Sweepah, and a bunch of other dudes I can't remember right now.

So, go reserve your copy, fast like a bunny, not slow, like a...

The Imageyenation crew's favorite favorite half-Gay, all Danish, dance-music duo Junior Senior is finally set to release their sophomore album 'Hey Hey My My Yo Yo' here in the states on August 14th. The album will actually be a full two years old by that point, which is kinda sad. But the American release of the album will be packaged with a companion disc, a seven-song EP called 'Say Hello, Wave Goodbye,' which features all new music! Of the new material Jeppe "Senior" Laursen (who rocks a pretty sweet sweater) said; "We wanted to dance this summer, so we went into the studio. Four days. Wham-bam! I hope people will want to dance to it too."

If you know what's good for you you'll dance to it alongside Junior Senior, live and in person, at one of their upcoming live dates here in the states. And if you need some coercion, the Boston gig boasts performances by Imageyenation featurees Gravy Train!!!! too.

08/10 New Orleans, LA - Ryko Convention (Tipitina's Uptown)
08/11Boston, MA - Middle East
08/13New York, NY - Highline Ballroom
08/15 Los Angeles, CA - Roxy
08/16 San Francisco, CA - Popscene

And finally, just for kicks, here's the video clip for "Can I Get Get Get" from the 'Hey Hey My My Yo Yo' album, followed by a super-awesome cover of the very same song by Junior Senior's labelmates Lars and Lime of Swedish band Wolfkin, recorded live in their living room.

Who is this girl Remi Nicole, and why is the video for her song "Go Mr. Sunshine" so good? I imagine this is what Corinne Bailey Rae would sound like if she made sorta rocky Guitar-Pop rather than her coffeshop hybrid of Soul, Jazz and Pop. It's not a bad tune at all actually, but the video, which has a milkcrate robot innit, is ... !

I guess homegirl is on the Island/Universal Records label over in the UK, and they'll be releasing the "Go Mr. Sunshine" single on CD and 7'' vinyl on August 20th. The tune became available as a downloadable internet single on August 13th. No idea when her album's due.

British pop star Mika made chubby girls around the world happy when he put his song "Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)" on his album. I know when I heard the song, I went nuts and danced all over the place. Then I wondered what the video would look like, as it would have to be as amazing as the song itself.

Well, today my desire to see the video was fulfilled. The super-skinny Mika prances around London while surrounded by a load of beautiful big girls dressed in some amazing outfits.

Needless to say, I am not disappointed.

I came across this video on one of my other favorite websites, Boards Mag Screeningroom. It's the video for the song "Capital" by the Belarusian band Lyapis Trubetskoy (written in Russian as Ляпис Трубецкой). The song is a cool animated clip that shows Communist poster style drawings of some of today's world leaders and some of the world's capitals. And while I don't understand the lyrics to the song at all, I'm pretty sure they are talking a lot about Karl Marx. Who is, of course, the author of 'Das Kapital.'

I posted an MP3 of Philadelphia-based Emo-Soul band Hail Social's "Heaven" in a "New Music Monday" post a couple weeks ago. Well, suprise, surprise, they've got a video clip for it! It reminds me of 'Labyrinth,' and Duran Duran's "Wild Boys" for some strange reason.

Hail Social "Heaven"

Vampire Weekend "Mansard Roof"

I'm pretty sure this isn't really the cover to New York-based quartet Vampire Weekend's Cape Cod-themed self-titled debut album. But whatever, this was a bad week when it came to official album cover artwork. What's really important is the song "Mansard Roof," which is like a musical chimera, combining '50s style Rock and Pop, '60s Garage-Rock and proto-Punk, and modern Shoegaze, Post-Punk, and Indie-Rock. At first it sounds like it belongs on oldies radio, but then the drums go crazy, the organs bubble funkily, the guitars squeal, and subtle electronics pop up. It's juicy Pure-Pop any way you cut it.

The Teenagers "Self Love"

Again, this is totally not the real cover of French Indie-Dance trio The Teenagers' forthcoming Merok Records debut 'Demos and New Songs.' But it looks like an album cover, what with the name and all, right? Anyway, you've doubtlessly already heard their "dirty, just like I like it," incest-endorsing first single "Homecoming." If you dug it, you should be happy to know they continue peddling their funky filth on the album. "Selflove," an ode to masturbation that's both smooth and disturbing, and which stacks up pretty well against The Buzzcocks' classic "Orgasm Addict," is a perfect example of that.

Thieves Like Us "Love Lets Us Down"

Nope, that's not the cover of Swedish/American (by way of Germany) Indie-Dance trio Thieves Like Us' debut album either. Not even close. When the album, titled 'Plays Songs for You' drops on Kitsune Records I'm sure it will have a real cover though. The band's single "Drugs in My Body" (which is on the newest Kitsune comp) has been an Urban Alternatives favorite for a while now, and the rest of the album's pretty sweet too. "Love Let's Down" really plays up their proclivity for melodic and melancholy Synthpop in the style of New Order, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, and Depeche Mode.

The Boys and Girls Club "Summer in the City"

Believe it or not, there's actually a chance that this is the cover to Brooklyn, New York's The Boys and Girls Club's new EP! However, the CDR copy I have has a totally different image on the cover insert, so who the fuck knows? Anyway, it's titled 'A Simple Night of Dancing With...' and it's one of my favorite debut releases of the year. In fact, the group (comprised of producer Scott Thorough, of Hip-Hop crew Nuclear Family, and vocalist Mike McGuire, of Indietronica act Short Stories) is one of my favorite new acts of the year too. When you title a song "Summer in the City," and it's a syrupy, Hip-Hop influenced, Pop-Soul meets IDM number that's so cold and, yet so sensual, it's like making love to a robot, you know you've got a classic on your hands!

The members of the Imageyenation Collective, like music. We also like sexy people. So, every day this week the individual members of the Imageyenation team will post our personal lists featuring the ten sexiest music-related people we can think of. Sexy...

I thought this list would be a piece of cake so I started to jot down some names and within 5 minutes I was well over 10 people. Maybe it's because I have an eclectic view on the term sexy, which is not necessarily based on looks but the personality, ambitions, and the vibe of the individual. So without further adieu and in no particular order, besides alphabetically, here are my top 10 sexy people.

David Bowie

I can't help it but I'm automatically attracted to guys who appear "androgynous," transgender, wear creative outfits, and makeup. One of the first acclaimed artists to strut his "glamorous" side was Mr. David Robert Jones otherwise known as David Bowie. Ever since I saw him in the 'Labyrinth' I've become infatuated with the man. He's smart, has a sexy voice, tall, English, creative, has a great sense of fashion, which may be do to his beautiful wife model Iman Abdulmajd, and can wear makeup better than myself.

Jeff Buckley

I can't say enough about this man. I love everything about him. If my friend hadn't introduced me to his music back in 1995 I think part of me would be lost. He’s helped me cope through relationships, inspired my creativity and help me escape reality by listening his voice which is one of the most amazing voices I've heard. Though I was lost when I found out about his death in 1997 and still to this day wonder what other masterpieces he would have created. Despite his death I'm grateful Jeff Buckley's legacy has lived through movies, TV shows, and other artists talking about him or doing their spin off of his songs. If I could chose an album to take to me on a deserted Island it would be Jeff Buckley's 'Grace.'

Common

If it's one man my mother and I can actually agree on being sexy it's Common. I seriously can't look at any pictures of him without thinking naughty thoughts about how I'd like to….well use your imagination. I'm not sure how long our relationship would last because I'd just let him get away with murder if he batted those gorgeous brown eyes and sang to me. He's also a vegetarian and PETA activist. I have a thing for gifted vegetarian men who shave their head. Look at those eyes…someone hand me a towel.

Carols D

He sort of looked like an Emo, Gothic version of George Mcfly, but now
Interpol bassist Carlos Dengler is rocking a fantastic new look. I actually did a double take and thought Interpol had a new band member. I think it's the year of the stash and Carlos has a jump-start on the trend. Carlos is one of those guys I'd crush on in art school but was too busy practicing in the basement with his band and preferred a girl that he could share jeans, smoke and throw back a pack of PBRs with. Not really my idea of fun but either way he's still sexy.

Jean-Benoit Dunckel

I'm including Air's Jean-Benoit Dunckel, also known as Darkel, because I recently had a dream about him. We were just lying in bed together, clothed I swear, or maybe he had his shirt off, talking about stuff, I don't remember, but I felt like we understood one another possibly because we're both Virgos and have the French connection going. Why did I have a dream about him? Maybe I was thinking about an Air song, saw him on TV or it's the fact that I can't resist a sexy Frenchmen. What ever it may be Dunkel and other band member Nicolas Godin need to call me up for peu d'amour faisant or ménage à trios as we say! Oh la la!

Adam Jones

I find Tool's guitarist Adam Jones sexy in a variety of ways. Number one: He's an amazing guitarist who puts me in a trance whenever I hear him go on a guitar tangent. Two: I find mysterious "odd" looking men attractive for some reason, I even find Steve Buscemi attractive, but I won't go there. Three: He's a brilliant artist whose work I admire. I didn't know Jones directed and created several Tool videos until recently and anyone who has a twisted vision like I do with my art I'm instantly drawn too. Adam lets get in touch and make some stop motion videos of deformed beings slicing each other up and eating babies who then turn into squids.

One of my favorite videos done my Adam is "Schimsm."

Madonna

Love her, hate her, she doesn't care. She's Madonna, the "queen of pop." I decided to include Madonna because she was one of the first musicians in my music collection as well as the first women I saw on MTV who wasn't ashamed to be who she was; a sexual diva. A majority of music videos I saw in the 80's portrayed women as the submissive "eye candy" type while Madonna's videos were the opposite. She was the dominant figure and all the men were her objects. I couldn't help but be drawn to her sexual aura. Taboo in the 80's but now it's quite common to see artists like Cristina Aguilera, or Brittney Spears flaunting their stuff in their music videos. Madonna, I salute you for being a material girl, wearing those cone bras and not being ashamed to "express" yourself.

Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement.

Newly added to my sexy list are 'Flight of the Conchords' Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement. The show is based on Mckenzie and Clement, a two-man band from New Zealand who move to New York to break into the music industry. Throughout each show these two go into a singing montage about anything and everything from girls, to robots, to well, you name it. I admit when I saw the first episode of 'Flight of the Conchords' on HBO I thought it was the lamest thing ever, but I thought the guys were cute, so I decided to have a second "date" and watch the next episode. It began to grow on me and I found myself laughing at the quirky humor of the show and creative songs. You don’t need HBO to see the latest episodes. Instead you can see them here.

John Travolta

I had to add John Travolta to the list because I did have a crush on him when he was Danny Zuko in 'Grease', but after I saw him put on a fat suit, wear makeup and prance around in ladies outfits, which I'm sure he enjoyed, for the musical movie remake 'Hairspray' I knew he needed to be added to the list. Though I'm not sure I can take him seriously anymore since every time I hear his name or see him all I can picture is him dressed up as a big woman with man hands like the picture you see above.

I hope as you've been reading Imageyenation's Top 10 Music Industry Crushes lists this week, you've been listening to some sexy sexy music. And by that I mean Songs About Fucking. My favorite genre!

And really, sometimes, nobody does it as raw as the girls of Avenue D: Debbie and Daphne D, notable runners-up in R-Uh's Top 10 Crush list. They've been playing the foul-mouthed electro-rap game since 2001 and you know Uffie was bumping their shit when she was like 13 (Fuck yeah jail-bait of the month!).

Here, 2 of my favorite Avenue D songs:

Avenue D "2d2f"

Avenue D "You Love This Ass"

2004's "2d2f" is a dirty electroclash classic and the title to "You Love This Ass" really says everything you need to know about it.

We get home. I get hot. You pass out. Sucks a lot!

Lemme tell ya, I've had my fair share of crushes on "music industry" folks in my time. I felt it was only right to go back to where it all began. I'm taking sexy back, back into time!

Prince

What better way to get this started than with this man. Prince is Sexy. Sexy is Prince. Pannies. Pegasus. Heels and fannys. Hell yes. Did I mention he can sing and play guitar? Well he can.

Chaka Khan

Chaka, Chaka, Chaka
Chaka Khan
Chaka Khan
Chaka Khan
Chaka Khan

Chaka Khan
Let me rock you
Let me rock you
Chaka Khan
Let me rock you
That's all I wanna do
Chaka Khan
Let me rock you
Let me rock you
Chaka Khan
Let me rock you
'Cause I feel for you
Chaka Khan
Won't you tell me
What you wanna do
Do you feel for me
The way I feel for you
Chaka Khan
Let me tell you what I wanna do
I wanna love you
Wanna hug you
Wanna squeeze you too
Let me take you in my arms
Let me fill you with my charms
Chaka
'Cause you know that I'm the one
To keep you warm, Chaka
I'll make it more than just a physical dream
I wanna rock you, Chaka, baby
'Cuz you make me wanna scream
Let me rock you
Rock you

Freddie Mercury

Get on your knees and bow down to the Rock God that is Freddie Mercury...now give him some head! Look up "front man" in the dictionary and you'll find his picture there. Truth be told you could also look up "bottom man" and find his picture there as well. Easily one of my favorite people of all time.

Grace Jones

My Jamaican Girl. Grace Jones is ridiculous. 5'10" of long sexy lady. She scares the crap out of me and gives me a hard on at the same time. What more could I ask for?

Sylvester

Sylvester James was a pioneer, an icon and a fucking diva. Take notes bitches this sister was ahead of her time.

Sade

One of the most unique artists of our time. Where did she disappear too? Get back in the lab girl and crank out another masterpiece! Then come over and we can make sweet love while we listen to it.

Boy George

Gender bending is sexy. I always wondered what my parents thought when I would bug them to play my Culture Club tapes when we were in the car. I used to lay up in my bed and dream of going to the mall with Boy George to buy makeup, get our hair done and get all sassy. Those dreams were "red, gold and green" by the way.

Annabella Lwin

Annabella is the archetype of all the current sexy ladies of music that I'm crushing on. Rocking a mohawk and posing nakey on album covers when you are a teenager will always be sexy.

She also bears a resemblance to a certain someone I'm quite fond of. That person's middle name? Anabela. Yup:

Pete Burns

Before there was Boy George there was Pete Burns. What's more sexy than an androgynous, eyepatch wearing New Romantic? Not too much. His band, Dead Or Alive, had me spinning "right round, like a record baby" in my room as a kid. Right round into cross dressing and makeup! Yay!

I must say though that I prefer the Pete Burns 1987 version over the 2007 version.

Ester Cordet

One of the sexiest album covers of all time. One of the sexiest album cover ladies of all time. The Ohio Players album covers are well known for being sexy but this one takes the cake. The former Playboy Playmate was rumored to be responsible for a scream heard on "Love Rollercoaster". As urban legend has it she was stabbed to death by the band's manager during a recording session after complaining about injuries sustained from the honey and fiber glass used in the photo and demanding compensation. This of course was false. If time time travel was possible I'd go back to 1974 and engage in a different type of stabbing with Miss Cordet.

Hip Hop collective Strange Fruit Project have a new video out for their single "Get Live" off of their album The Healing which came out last year. The track features Erykah Badu who is also in the video sportin' a pretty kick ass hat.

Also check out Strange Fruit Project's MySpace Page.

Imageyenation favorites Justice have lent their creative talents to Justin Timberlake's latest single "LoveStoned." It sort of has a 1970's disco thing going on and personally, I think it's gonna be a huge summer remix.

Check it out and leave your thoughts.

I've been playing Gangstarr Foundation member Big Shug's newest single "Play It" pretty regularly on Urban Alternatives for the last month or two. It's one of the few buttery underground Hip-Hop bangers to drop so-far this Summer. Despite the dissolution of Gangstarr Primo came through for dude, even though he's one of Guru's old Boston homies. And the new video clip for the track, which features a lot of cool music technology, is pretty much perfect.

Shug's long-awaited (he was an original member of Gangstarr, and put out his first single way back in 1995) debut full-length 'Streetchamp' drops via the Babyegrande Records label on July 17th. I have it, but haven't given it a listen yet. Be sure to look out for a track from the album in an upcoming "Hip-Hop Thursday" post.

Uncut Raw "727"

You've never heard of either of these dudes, but Selfish and Fluent of Midwestern duo Uncut Raw have released one of the best Hip-Hop albums of the year. Fuck it, their debut 'First Toke' just might be one of the best Hip-Hop albums of the last decade! It's right in there with that dirty, dusty, grimy, sample-based, real, raw Hip-Hop shit like Doom's 'Operation: Doomsday' (which it reminds me of in a big way), early Wu-Tang, and the like. The ill crate-dug loops, druggy rhymes, and gritty recording quality of joints like "727" are fucking classic.

Blue Scholars "Ordinary Guys"

Geologic and Sabzi of Seattle-based Blue Scholars are just some ordinary guys. But their sophomore album 'Bayani' is actually pretty extra-ordinary. They've grown and improved markedly since their solid debut and are one of a growing number of newer groups helping put the Pacific Northwest on the Hip-Hop map. Pretty big accomplisments for a couple of "Ordinary Guys," don't you think?

Dyme Def "For the World"

I copped 'Space Music,' the debut LP from another Seattle-based act, a trio named Dyme Def, because it's called "space music," and it had a cool outer-space-themed cover. Yeah, I'm easy to impress. The music, produced by veteran beatmaker Bean One, isn't all that spacey, but it's solid none-the-less. Like I said, the Northwestern States are making moves. The track "For the World" flips that soulful, Kanye West-esque, vocal-sample driven, boom-bap style, pretty nicely.

DJ Khaled "Brown Paper Bag" feat. Young Jeezy, Juelz Santana, Rick Ross, Lil' Wayne, Fat Joe and Dre

I won't front. This song, and the album it's from are both fucking terrible. I don't really dig DJ Khaled's beats. And most of the artists he works with are totally uninteresting to me. That said, "Brown Paper Bag" has the most ridiculous chorus of all time. And it's got Juelz Santana on it rapping about buying Timberlands. Even better, Lil' Wayne is rapping like a member of the Mystidious Misfits, talking about snorkling, dolphins, orphans and Clark Kent, and just destroying the track. You'll think it's awful, but you'll sing along.

You might remember, I posted "Club Situation" by Bay Area sleazy, poppy Electro band Gravy Train!!!! in a "New Music Monday" post a couple weeks ago. Well, they went and made a video for that shit, son! It's sort of like the opening sequence of 'Irreversable,' but starring The Go-Go's. I know, just thinking about it feels sexy, right?

The members of the Imageyenation Collective, like music. We also like sexy people. So, every day this week the individual members of the Imageyenation team will post our personal lists featuring the ten sexiest music-related people we can think of. Sexy...

I'm not only the mastermind of this "crush list" experiment, I'm also the guy who started this whole goddamn website. So respect my gangsta. And if you're on this list... don't hesitate to get in touch.

Beth Ditto

Oh Beth Ditto, you Rubenesque goddess of ultra-liberal, indie-chick glory! Why must you dig chicks, and dudes who used to be chicks? Oh Beth, you old-school Soul diva in the body of a greasy modern-day Post-Punk hipsterette! If only you dug me instead! We could totally get it on, baby. It would be beautiful. I'd make us a mixtape that was equal parts humid southern Soul and sweaty dancefloor Post-Punk (Anne Peebles meets ESG... in the bedroom), that would set the mood off right. Then we could get to the lovin'. Your squeezable flesh and infinite curves would be a joy to explore with fingertips and tongue. The salty taste of the sweat glistening across your soft skin and gathering in the hidden hollows of your body like an erotic elixir, inflaming my desire to pleasure you in ways unimaginable. Damn girl, self-control is the only thing "standing in the way" of me humping this computer screen right now. I love you Beth. Call me.

Kimya Dawson

Oregon-based Anti-Folk artist Kimya Dawson is part of a number of "crush" sub-groups I mention elsewhere on this list; Black girls, dirty Punk chicks, indie/hipster broads, whimsical bohemian pixies, grown women imbued with a sense of girlish glee, and one more I didn't mention yet; girls who look like boys. Or at least she looks like a boy in this (old) picture. She recently had a baby, so lately she's been looking really "mommy," but I think she looks hotter like this. Truth be told she's sported many different looks over the years, a mohawk, Mr. Lif-style dreadlocks, a giant puffy afro... I've even seen her rocking a "furry" costume. Yeah, she's a character. But she writes really amazing, often painfully personal songs, and sings them with a voice of pure innocence and an unparalleled intimacy. I fell in love with her voice first. Then her words. Then I noticed she was also a cutie, and possessed a lot of the qualities I dig in a foxxxy "alternative" mama. Her song "Loose Lips" has become one of my favorite songs of all time. And when she sings the words "remember that I love you" it's virtually impossible not to believe her, and take it to heart.

Marina Vello (of Bonde do Role)

If you're wondering why the giant statue of Jesus on the cover of Brazilian Baile Funk trio Bonde do Role's album is shooting lasers out of his eyes, it's because he's trying to use his secret x-ray Jew vision to see group-member Marina Vello naked. Seriously, she's got an adorable baby-face, a cute accent, a bubbly demeanor, some decent cans (how do you say "cleavage" in Portuguese?), a sweet rump (what about "fanny?"), and weird shoulder tattoos that look like bra-straps. She's also Brazilian! And Brazilians are fucking hot and steamy any way you cut it. Or has your fancy ass never seen 'Emmannuelle in Brazil?' Regardless, she's busted her way onto my crush list the same way her band has busted onto the music scene... In a big way. Their 'With Lasers' is one of the best records of the year, and her face is one of the most crush-on-able of the year.

Kid Sister

Despite the fact that I think she's "teh secks," I'm not gonna be all creepy and sexual in my summation of why Kid Sister is on my crush list. I just can't do it. Yes, she's one of the undisputed super-hotties of the current Hip-Hop, underground dance, and Pop scenes. But she was sweet enough to message me on MySpace a while back thanking me for mentioning her in my music bloggery. And her candy-coated, youthfully girlish tone, not to mention the fact that she called me "nice," just makes it impossible for me to be all sleazy and publicly indulge in slimy sex-fantasies about her. Please note, I said publicly... I mean Christ, I am human! Seriously, this girl is a fucking star. Songs like "Pro Nails" and "Control" should be enormous hits on radio and in the clubs. So, she's talented, gorgeous, and a nice young lady. How could I not have a crush on her?

Nedelle

Oakland-based "girl-with-guitar" Nedelle Torrissi is sort of responsible for my Indie-Pop obsession over the last four-or-so-years. Prior to hearing her soulful, girl-group-influenced debut CD 'Republic of Two' I was really a Hip-Hop head with a part-time side-interest in other musical genres, including Indie stuff. But that album changed everything for me. And after spending weeks listening to nothing but Nedelle's prettiness, I got a full-on hard-on for breezy underground Pop of pretty much every stripe. This was due in no small part to the fact that Nedelle has the most lusciously girlish voice, and is one of the cutest pseudo-hipster, all-boho, Indie chicks on the planet. And even though her subsequent albums have stepped back from the pure Pop goodness of 'Republic of Two' for a more stripped-down, folky style, I still love her to pieces and think she's a super-duper-cutie.

Björk

A couple months ago I dedicated a Blogarhythms post over on Okayplayer to Björk. I opened that post with a confession about how I want to have "filthy Icelandic elf-sex" with her before positing the notion that after fucking my brains out she'd probably eat my face off and use samples of the sounds my faceless corpse made in her music. I still stand by every word of that post. It is the sense of faerie-like playfulness, mischievousness, and frightening danger she possesses that makes the Icelandic pixie so sexually appealing. She's also incredibly talented, cute as a goddamn button, and likes being groped by Polar Bears. So, there's hope yet for enormous, pale, somewhat furry, individuals that we too may some day grope her.

Bunny Rabbit

Like Beth Ditto, Brooklyn, New York-based Post-Rap diva Bunny Rabbit is "queer." And like Björk, young Ms. Rincon sort of scares the shit out of me. She's also freakin' adorable though. So no matter how much she raps about having sex with girls, smoking crack, and having visions of a "monkey Christ," she still gives me a raging boner. Her monotone "I'm so bored to be rapping" delivery and flow remind me a whole lot of Ladybug Mecca of Digable Planets, another Rap artist who's been on my "crush list" since the early 1990s, but who isn't on this list for the simple fact that she didn't put anything new out this year. With her little pixie haircut (not to be confused with Björk, who is an actual pixie, as in one of the "faerie folk," not to be confused with Beth Ditto who is one of the "queer" folk, the male variety of which are sometimes referred to by the uncouth as "fairies") she sort of has a post-hip-hop-generation Brooklyn hipster Ladybug look going on as well. Comparisons aside, she's just goddamn sexy, even though I can't figure out what her ethnic background (Latin? Asian?) is for the life of me. I know one thing though, her lover and music partner Black Cracker is one lucky broad.

Corinne Bailey Rae

It should come as a surprise to anyone who knows me, and knows the women I've had serious relationships with, to note that there are so-few Black girls on my crush list. This is partially due to the fact that most Black women in the modern music industry are neck-deep in the garbage heap that is post-hip-hop-generation R&B (to quote De La Soul from 16 fucking years ago... "rap and bullshit"), two forms of music that for the most part do not interest me in the least. And since I would find it hard crushing on a chick whose music I hated (kinda like how I have a hard time crushing on a regular chick whose musical taste I hate), I just can't, in good conscience, get my R&B diva crush on... No matter how big their ass or titties are, or how long and smooth their legs look. Besides, Kelis marrying wack-ass Nas, going totally crazy, yelling at hookers, and putting out an incredibly garbagey album kind of ruined R&B chicks for me for a while (seriously Kelis, come back to me baby... I'll treat you right... I promise). Anyway, the closest you're gonna get to that scene on this list is UK "coffee-shop chick" Corinne Bailey Rae. The first thing that got me hooked on this girl was her voice, which is all at once totally precious and utterly fucking gorgeous (kinda like the girls from CocoRosie, or Regina Spektor... who could easily be on this list too). Then I saw what she looked like, a little wispy thing (yeah, I have a thing for chubby chicks and stick-figures, so?) with those big, expressive brown eyes, and a pair of totally luscious lips. Oh my God! Throw in her bohemian frocks, and the fact that she used to be a Punk-Rock chick (I also have a thing for those... ) and it's love. I still get weak whenever I hear "Like a Star." Part of it is her voice, but there's something about that "oil on my hands" line that's sexual in such a weird fucking way. Like "hey baby, what are you gonna do with those slippery hands?" I have some ideas... Mmmmm.

M.I.A.

Despite being an object of my affection a few years back, a couple of months ago I never would have thought Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam, a.k.a. M.I.A. would make it on to my current crush list. There's been a whole crop of sexy, arty, hipster broads (see: Marina from Bonde do Role, Kid Sister, and Bunny Rabbit... all on my list) who've been giving her a run for her possibly terrorism-related (just kidding) money of late. This has conspired to make her a little less unique than she once was, and thus something of an underdog in the crush category for me. But then, I saw the "Boyz" video, and this photo of her, and it was (Sri Lankan) jungle love (I think I want to know her... if you get my drift) all over again. Galang-a-lang-a-lang indeed Ms. Arulpragasam, all over your sweet-sweet tush!

Kevin Barnes (of Of Montreal)

Not only am I married to Kevin Barnes (he came out on stage in a white wedding dress and married the entire audience at a 2006 tour-stop in Boston) but I've seen his penis. The Of Montreal front-man bared it all live on stage at a show in Las Vegas earlier this year. But the fact of the matter is, he bares it all every time he puts his lips in front of a mic and sings one of his expertly crafted, emotionally daring, intellectually challenging, melodically beautiful, and rhythmically moving, Pop songs. He writes songs that are about his life, but feel like they're about my life. They're scary, and they hurt, but they're so fucking catchy that I bop around to them, sing along, and want to dance whenever I hear them. He's like some kind of sexy elf, or fallen Indie Pop angel (a line like "all the party people dancing, for the indie star, but he's the worst faker by far," which could easily be self-criticism, could also be seen as a metaphor for Lucifer) who knows all about the human condition and seeks to enlighten it through song and dance. Oh, and he pulls off eye makeup and fishnets better than any Pop singer since Prince.

And since this is my freakin' website, and I can cheat if I want to, I've got another 10 "Runner Up" candidates "after the jump" as they say.

If it feels like I just posted a video by these guys, it's because I did. But apparently DFA Records artists Prinzhorn Dance School are preparing to release a new single, titled "Crackerjack Docker," on August 6th. And they've already got a minimalist, arty video for it!

And before you ask, yes the lyrics do consist of the phrases "sparring monkey" and "beezewax" being shouted over and over again. And yes, they do also talk about leaving The Shire... Shout out to Bilbo Baggins. Their self-titled full-length is due out soon on DFA Records.

The first single from M.I.A.'s forthcoming sophomore album 'Kala,' the Switch produced "Boyz," is undoubtedly one of the official Summer bangers of 2007. The single has an acapella on it, but I've only heard a couple of remixes so far. The first one to really catch my ear though is this one, sent to me by German producer and remixer Kimono Kops, which takes the track in an entirely new direction.

I wasn't feeling it too tough when I got the promo a while back, but the new Neptunes produced single "Give it Up," from Chicago's Twista featuring Pharrell Williams, has grown on me since. It kinda makes me wish I owned a strip club, because I'd make the DJ play this, then I'd turn the lights way down, cut the air conditioner off, let it get all hot, and just douse all my dancers with baby oil.

The video's got some pretty nice eye candy in it too. Lady Glock posts videos that are candy colored, I just post videos that are full of eye candy. Twista's new album 'Adrenaline Rush 2007' (didn't he already have an album called that?) drops August 19th on Atlantic Records.

The members of the Imageyenation Collective, like music. We also like sexy people. So, every day this week the individual members of the Imageyenation team will post our personal lists featuring the ten sexiest music-related people we can think of. Sexy...

When compiling this list, I found it quite difficult to separate my love for certain industry people from my love of their music. I found that the majority of artists mentioned on my list are there because I fell in love with their voices and sounds before I even saw their faces. But when I finally did see their faces and saw that they were actually all pretty hot, it was sort of a nice bonus. Good music + Sexy Artists = A very very content Lady Glock.

Mos Def

Mos Def has been the love of my Hip Hop life since I was about seventeen. 'Black On Both Sides' was my first rap album and it was an album that has traveled with me over the years. The first time I heard "Ms. Fat Booty," I swore it was written for me. People are always amazed that I know all the lyrics to the song. My love for Mos Def knows no bounds. I supported him through the "Jack Johnson" project. I continually support him through his acting career. I even watched the movie Island of the Dead because he was in it. I want to have Mos Def's children. I want to sit on the front porch of our brownstone in Brooklyn and grow old with him. In other words, Mos Def can shine his light on my world any time.

Justin Timberlake

I was never into Justin Timberlake when he was in N'Sync. When he went off to his solo career, I didn't really pay too much attention. I liked some tracks off of Justified but it wasn't until I saw him the video for "Cry Me a River" that JT popped and locked his way into my heart. By the time "My Love" came around, I was enthralled. Whenever I hear Justin sing "If I wrote you a symphony…" over Timbo's beats, I just melt. Even though he can be a prissy diva sometimes, I'd still (as Michael K. over at DListed says) let him "put it in."

Andre 3000

Andre 3000 fascinates me because he is not only a man of many names, but also a man of many many amazing outfits. From wigs to alien costumes to seersucker suits, Andre "Ice Cold" Benjamin is a sexy stylish man. And did any one see Jon Stewart interview him on The Daily Show a couple years back? He's ADORABLE!

Mark Ronson

You know that amazingly hipsteriffic guy who you see at the bar and you slag him off for being a pretentious dick but secretly you want to take him home and shag his brains out? That's me and Mark Ronson. And he's Jewish! My mother would be so proud.

Lily Allen "Smile (Mark Ronson DC Remix)" feat. Wale

Roots Manuva

I fell in love with Roots Manuva's voice long before I even saw a picture of him. I’m still hoping that maybe one day I'll bump into him (literally) in London just so he’ll say "Excuse me."

Robin Thicke

Ah, Robin Thicke. Again with the voice. And those eyes. And that style. Quick! Someone get me a fan before I melt!

Thavius Beck

I can't remember whether I heard Thavius Beck's music first or saw him. Actually, I think I experienced both around the same time (I watched Ben Barnes' video for Thavius Beck's song "To Make Manifest"). At any rate, he is an artist who strikes me as being really mysterious yet totally down to earth. He's currently working with a Lady Glock Top Ten List runner up, Saul Williams. So you know I'll be looking forward to that.

Collie Buddz

To me, there is something so intriguingly sexy about a white man speaking patois. As nerdy and academic as this may sound, it's so post-colonial, and it turns me on.

Lenny Kravitz

When I was about 11 or 12, my mother and I were in a music shop. She picked up a cassette tape out of a bin and said "Oh, I wonder if this guy is a Jewish musician." Thrteen years after my mother's unwitting discovery, I am still head over heels in love with Lenny Kravitz. The book he did with photographer Mark Seliger adorns my book shelf and the ad he was in for Absolute Vodka occasionally adorns my desktop. He is lusciously divine. And also half-Jewish!

Lenny Kravitz "Breathe (Absolute Kravitz Remix by Chromeo)"

Kele Okereke

In an interview with Dazed and Confused Magazine, the sexy, sexually ambiguous Bloc Party lead singer said that one of the things that had influenced him when creating 'A Weekend In The City' was Situationist Guy Debord's pivotal book 'Society of the Spectecle.' I was smitten.

The members of the Imageyenation Collective, like music. We also like sexy people. So, every day this week the individual members of the Imageyenation team will post our personal lists featuring the ten sexiest music-related people we can think of. Sexy...

Lisa Loeb

"And you say...I only hear what I want to." C'mon – every guy thought she was cute in her angry yet vulnerable, sexy yet nerdy video. To this day, I still confuse her with Eva Angelina (in my mind). Lisa was definitely ahead of her time in making the 'smart' look popular.

Salt 'N' Pepa's "Shoop" (the video)

The year was 1993. Little Cere was only 12 years old and each afternoon after school he'd sit down and watch MTV for hours. He'd watch videos by Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and if he was lucky, Green Jelly's "Three Little Pigs" would show up. He'd also watch a certain sexy video featuring a certain female rap duo talking about "shooping" and looking quite lovely. By today's standards the video is pretty tame – but back then it was a different story.

Haley Scarnato

It's no secret that Haley only lasted so long on 'Idol' because of one thing – legs – well, I guess that's two things isn't it? I haven't cried that hard during an Idol results show since Elliot Yamin got voted off.

Christy Carlson Romano

To be honest, I've never even listened to her music. But I've had a little thing for Shia's TV-older-sister since 'Even Stevens' debuted in 2000. I'm not sure what it was about CCR that I liked so much but she's released albums so it counts.

Jenny Lewis

I begged and begged to go see 'The Wizard' in theatres. Obviously, I wanted see 'Super Mario Brothers 3' and that badass Power Glove- but it was Jenny Lewis that stole my heart that day and she's never let it go. Now she's in a band with Pinsky. That blew my mind.

Raven-Symone

The littlest Cosby kid grew up.

Princess Superstar

Who's sexier than a "Bad Babysitter?" A bad babysitter who raps and DJs. That's who.

Rashida Jones

In the internal debate over Pam vs. Karen – I'm siding with Quincy's daughter, Rashida. Plus she rich. (She is the daughter of a music mogul - it counts!)

M.I.A.

I made no bones about my feelings for M.I.A. back when her debut album dropped. I pretty much summed it up real good.

Fallon Bowman

Dirty secret – I used to be into Metal. Oh, I can't deny angst-ridden 19-year old me any longer. Fallon was definitely the star of all-girl all-Canadian metal band Kittie. Yes, I owned their album. One time, I even tried to interview them for this zine (shall remain nameless) for which I used to write album and movie reviews. I just wanted to talk to Fallon. I guess they didn't think that zine was big-time enough because after an initial round of emails I never heard back from their manager guy again.

Scottish Electro guy, and the bane of Lady Glock's concert-going experience, Calvin Harris gets his Beck meets James Murphy on in the video for his newest single "Merrymaking At My Place."

It's a really fun song, and the video makes it just that much more fun. His album, 'I Invented Disco,' which I kinda love, is out now on the Fly Eye/Columbia Records label in the UK and here in the US.

I know I have a tendency to post what some deem to be crap songs. I don't deny this. If I have posted crappy music, it's either because a) I like it and don't care what other people think or b) because the song has a video that pleases me.

In the case of Sean Kingston's single "Beautiful Girls", both a and b apply. The song samples Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" and is such a head-boppingly catchy track, its hard not to like it. This song has of course already gotten some notice on TRL and 106 & Park, but few bloggers (aside from the likes of Different Kitchen and Idolator) have really picked up on it.

The video is a brightly colored tribute to those carefree days in the 1950's when teens used to go hang out at the soda shop. The combination of pop/lock/snap dance/lindy hop is fantastic and everything in the video looks like candy. And y'all should know about my penchant for candy colored videos as seen here and here.

Even though I like this song/video, I do have some questions to ask.

1. According to his MySpace page, Sean Kingston is 17. In a line in his song, he says "Back in '99, watchin' movies all the time/When I went away for doin' my first crime." Now if my calculations are correct, he went "away" for his "crime" when he was 9. Are they that rough in Kingston, Jamaica or am I missing something?

2. Is it just me or does JR Rotem look better as a 1950's nerd than he does a 2007 thug?

3. What 1950's diner had such a integrated counter? The video is clearly taking the 1950's nostalgia schtick a bit too far. Or maybe not far enough? Who knows?

At any rate, I hope someone else out there likes this video aside from me. I know it's definitely going to be one track I will be bumping a lot this summer. I mean, it's already on my MySpace page.

Editors Note — There's a bonus remix MP3 download that's really pretty awesome in the comments.

The members of the Imageyenation Collective, like music. We also like sexy people. So, every day this week the individual members of the Imageyenation team will post our personal lists featuring the ten sexiest music-related people we can think of. Sexy...

Seeing as how Monday is my favorite sexy day of the week, it's only fitting that today I present you R-Uh's Top 10 Music Industry Crushes!

Shuggie Otis

Because child guitar prodigies that redefined the psychedelic soul landscape by the age of 22 are just hot, and "Strawberry Letter 23" is one of my favorite songs EVER.

Shuggie Otis "Strawberry Letter 23"

Columbus Short

I know what you're thinking. He's an actor, not a musician. But given his past life as a choreographer (Britney's 'In The Zone' tour among others), I'm taking some artistic license and putting him on this list. No doubt I will be purchasing the 'Stomp the Yard' DVD and watching it over and over. More dance offs than you can handle + Columbus Short in an empty swimming pool = Good Times for R-Uh.

Exhibit A:

Wayne Coyne

Some say he's just a drugged-out high school drop-out, but seriously, I think Wayne Coyne just gets better with age like a fine distilled whiskey. The Flaming Lips still put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen, 'Christmas on Mars', the band's first feature film written and directed by Wayne himself will be released later this year, and the salt-and-pepper look he's been rocking over a rumpled suit becomes him quite nicely. Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Wayne Coyne!

Matt Goias

So he's one of the Svengalis behind Fannypack, a pack of teenage girls singing about cameltoes, which is kind of creepy when you think about it. But I've always had a thing for Little White Big Black Matt Goias. November 2003 - I went backstage and I think I touched him. Like OMG!

Kazu Makino

Forget that the title track off of Blonde Redhead's latest album '23' is one of the best tracks of 2007, due in large part to Kazu Makino's ethereal voice. Sometime between 'Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons' and 'Misery is a Butterfly,' woman took a horse's hoof to the jaw and she is still absolutely beautiful.

Blonde Redhead "23"

Amanda Blank

The first time I heard Amanda Blank's voice on "Bump," my mind was blown. Not since Jennifer Charles on Dan The Automator's 'Nathaniel Merriweather' has there been so much sexiness caressing my ears. AND she can play the foul-mouth rap game better than all them boys. That is H-O-T-T HOTT!

Spank Rock ft. Amanda Blank "Bump"

Sufjan Stevens

An imaginary conversation I once had with Sufjan Stevens in my head:

SS: Hi. I write beautiful orchestral indie-folk songs. I'm super sensitive. I even have a sensitive name. Sufjan. You don't even know how to pronounce it. Look, I'm wearing wings. You think that's stupid. Oh, stop pretending. You think I'm cute. Do you want to have my babies?
R-Uh: OKAY.

Beyonce

Sometimes she dresses terribly. And even worse, she'll fuck up the video for a totally banging song. She might even be 32. But goddamn, she is the sexiest pop star out there and just so. much. woman. And someone please tell me, how does she do that backbend thing in the video for "Deja Vu"?! In heels?!?! I can't get over it. 2:43 in:

Debbie Harry

My personal goddess of punk, I don't care if you think she's old. She is still badass. Please Hollywood gods, please let her biopic be awesome.

David Macklovitch

When Chromeo's taller half, David Macklovitch, is all like "You're My Tenderoni", I'm all like "Fo' sho, if you show me how to do that dance, baby then I'll let you get in my pants."

After spending the night working I can think of nothing better to find, and post about, at 7 AM before I go to bed than this. It's a ridiculously awesome video for the Flosstradamus remix of Matt & Kim's "Yeah Yeah," complete with kooky animation and puppets!

I'd post the MP3 too, but I'm too tired to re-encode it and upload it for you. So suck it. If you don't already own Matt & Kim's self-titled Iheartcomix Records debut, go get it. It's stoopid fresh. Also, if you know Kim's phone number, please send it to me. I think I luhh huhh.

ZibraZibra "Arcade Catastrophe"

Minneapolis four-piece ZibraZibra are nerds. They make songs about video games, and outer space, and robots, and shit. They have a lot of synthesizers. Oh, they also sing about synthesizers. They sound kind of like They Might Be Giants, but with synthesizers and vocoders and stuff. The cover of their debut LP '777,' out now on Royalty Etc. Records, is one of the most awesomest things I've ever seen. "Arcade Catastrophe" is about video games, robots, and synthesizers.

Bark Bark Bark "I'm Needy"

If you like stuff I've featured before like Dan Deacon, About, Panther, Dommm, and YACHT, you should dig Tuscon, Arizona's Bark Bark Bark and his debut CD 'Haunts.' He's on the same grainy, gritty, and glitchy Electro-Noise, Post-Punk shit, with a little bit of Beck-style funky-white-boy thrown in, that all those guys are on. "I'm Needy" is some crazy, crunked-up Rap plus Punk plus Electro shit, with an almost chopped and screwed bridge.

Chin Chin "Appetite"

Every jam band in the country thinks they can play some noodly amalgamation of Soul, Funk, and Jazz and pass it off as "Disco." But the fact of the matter is, they all suck. And Brooklyn, New York's Chin Chin is here to prove how much they suck. Those other bands that is. Chin Chin actually rules your face. Their self-titled debut, out now on Dalect Records, is retro contemporary dance music at it's finest. The vibes solo on "Appetite" will make you think Roy Ayers returned from the grave to rock out with these dudes. Oh, Roy Ayers isn't dead you say? Well, he'll wish he was after he hears these guys killing that "Acid Jazz" shit he started.

New Buffalo "You've Gone My Friend"

Folky Australian chanteuse New Buffalo has her "I sound like Feist and Regina Spektor without sounding like either" thing down. She's married to one of the dudes from The Avalanches. He plays keys on her new album 'Somewhere, Anywhere.' Other guests include homegirl from Architecture in Helsinki, and Imageyenation dandy Mountains in the Sky. "You've Gone My Friend" is bittersweet in the same way a lot of Folk-Rock was in the 1960's. Like, you could throw it in a poignant scene between Kevin and Winnie on 'The Wonder Years' and nobody would bat an eyelash. It's also got some subtle but satisfying keyboard action going on.

The boys from Star Trak are back with another one and it's a banger. Quotables for days. (P talking bout "Wheelie" for crying out loud!) Fresh chorus. Classic Neptunes beat. Me likey.

Fam-Lay "No Time For No's" feat. Pharrell & Clipse

Now hurry up and put that damn Kenna album out, and while you're at it do something with the guys you just signed, Chester French. Don't make me raise my voice son! Get crackin'! I got no time for no's either!

Even though it's super commercial for a "Grime" track, Tinchy Stryder's new single "Something About Your Smile" is wicked! It's way smooth, but crazy danceable, unlike most of the "club" tracks coming out of the American Hip-Hop scene. Perfect for dancefloors and the radio, this is the kind of song I wish was a huge fucking hit.

"Something About Your Smile" is the first single from the veteran Grime emcee's debut album 'Star in the Hood,' which is due out some time in August on the independent Takeover Entertainment label.

I could really give a fuck about Fabolous or Uncle Murda (whoever the fuck he is), and the beat from producer Versatile is pretty lame. But verses like this one from the Fab track "Brooklyn" are why, no matter what, Jay-Z remains one of my favorite emcees in the game.

I'm right here Fab
Wavin' the flag, I'm from Nostrand Ave.
I came to take the game in my Daddy Kane chain
Niggas gave it up smooth, they ain't wanna hear the bang
Bang, I'm back on my bully shit
That Flatbush, Bushwick, black hoodie shit
Half a billy in the bankroll
Bank stop any body, what's your bank hoe?
Big Beat's on the wheels
Spread love the Brooklyn way, b, how's it feel?
I'm on my Robin Thicke shit
Shit ever gets thick, back to robbin' niggas quick
Trick, click, ante up
All you niggas is Britney, pull your panties up
Whole borough is with me, hold your cannons up
Buck one for Bucktown, Brooklyn, what the fuck?

Fabolous "Brooklyn" feat. Jay-Z and Uncle Murda

That verse is vicious, son! Daddy Kane chain? Bushwick, black hoodie shit? Robin Thicke, robbing n****s quick? Britney n****s pull your panties up? Now why didn't Jay get open like this on 'Kingdom Come?'

The intro to this video is dumb long, but it's crazy, and the song, by London-based five-piece XX Teens, is even crazier. "Darlin'" sounds like Test Icicles, Architecture in Helsinki and the White Stripes had a baby, a baby they abandoned outside of a drum-machine factory.

The "Darlin'" single will be released by the Mute Irregulars Records label as a digital download, on special etched 7" vinyl, and 12" vinyl backed with an Andrew Weatherall remix, on Monday, July 16th.

I liked Jenny Lewis' solo record. And I dig her work with Dntel and Postal Service. Hell, I even liked her in 'The Wizard' with Fred Savage back in the day. But I never really got into her band Rilo Kiley too tough. I don't mind their new single "Moneymaker" though. It's got a sleazy, Classic Rock from the 1970s kind of thing going on, and the "porno confessional" video concept fits in with that vibe perfectly.

"Moneymaker" is the first singe from Rilo Kiley's forthcoming album 'Under the Blacklight,' out August 21st on the Warner Brothers label.

Editors Note — Over at the MOG online music community they have a tradition called "Hip-Hop Thursday." It basically entails people posting about Hip-Hop, on Thursday. Yeah... So anyway, I figured a "Hip-Hop Thursday" post would make a nice companion to our usual "New Music Monday" and present a good opportunity to talk about some fresh new Hip-Hop shit. Hope you dig it, and I'll try to make it as regular a feature as possible.

Serengeti "Puppies and Dogs" feat. Chriss Ill

Chicago indieground emcee Serengeti reminded me of MF Doom since I first heard his debut 'Dirty Flamingo' a number of years ago. He's released a ridiculous amount of albums since then, and has more on the way. His newest release is 'Noticeably Negro,' a meditation on race in America, which is out now on Audio8 Records. On the track "Puppies and Dogs" the Geti King sets aside the Doom-isms for some crazy-ass Kool Keith shit, rapping about "bee stings" and "little baby puppies" over scratches of ol' girl who was supposed to marry Eddie Murphy's Prince Akeem in 'Coming to America' barking like a dog.

Blu "Dancing in the Rain"

We've been supporting Los Angeles emcee Blu for a while on our Urban Alternatives radio show, first via his collaborations with Emanon producer Exile, and his Exile-produced "solo" work. His debut album 'Below the Heavens,' produced entirely by Exile, drops on Sound In Color Records on August 14th. Folks who dig Common, Kanye, Lupe and Murs should dig on this dude big time. "Dancing in the Rain" is one of the dusty, introspective joints on the LP that shows off Blu's skills and presents him at his best and most accessible.

Buff1 "SUPREME" feat. Invincible and Guilty Simpson

I don't know too much about Buff1 accept that he's from Michigan, but not from Detroit. The Athletic Mic League member and Ann Arbor native recently released his debut solo album 'Pure' on the A-Side Worldwide label. Even though he's not from "the D," his style fits right in with the artists that have put that city on the Hip-Hop map. On "SUPREME" he teams up with some of the most talented artists Detroit has to offer right now, as he trades verses with Invincible and Guilty Simpson on a Waajeed-produced "dusty but digital" banger that interpolates the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams."

Durrty Goodz "Keep Up"

Both Dizzee Rascal and Wiley came out with solid Grime albums within the last couple month, but the best Grime track I've heard recently is by a dude named Durrty Goodz (formerly Durrty Doogz). His vocal inflection is heavily influenced by Dancehall Reggae, but his flow is pretty incredible, and he's got a lot of personality and a cool sense of humor. His newest project is the 'Axiom EP,' out now on Awkward Records. The track in question is "Keep Up," which you really just need to listen to, because my words can't even do justice to it's manic "Reggarage" vibe, insane lyricism, witty punchlines, rapid-fire flow and infectious "keep up" kiddie chant of a chorus.

Me and Emeyesi were just discussing Amerie, wondering why there's no action surrounding her new album or a new single from it, last night while driving to Purity Supreme in Northampton. We still don't know why "Some Like It" isn't a single. But I digress. Here's the brand new video for Amerie's brand new single "Gotta Work"

Although it's been out in the UK since May, you'll have to wait until August 21st for 'Because I Love It,' Amerie's long-awaited third LP, to hit stores here in the states. Her legs look really sexy on the cover.

The second single and video from Dizzee Rascal's killer third album 'Maths and English' is the Wiley dis track "Pussyole (Old Skool)."

Rocking the Lynn Collins "Think" break, it's a Grime meets Hip-House meets B-More monster that makes me want to get crunk in da club.

I confess, when former A Tribe Called Quest front-man Q-Tip released his first solo single "Vivrant Thing" in 1999 I was unimpressed. No, that's too polite... I just plain didn't like it. And although my dislike for it has lessened over the years the whole experience of Q-Tip rapping a lot of nonsense to fashion models with his shirt off just never sat well with me. Sadly, Tip's newest foray into solo musicianship serves only to sully his legacy even more.

I guess I was just expecting more from a legend like Tip than his lukewarm new single "Work It Out." The fact that he's been on hiatus for so long only strengthens the need for him to come back with something really strong and utterly original. Not this. It's a sad and telling time we live in when groundbreaking Hip-Hop acts are releasing generic "Lite-Jazz" muzak Rap like "Work It Out" with a straight face. It's bad enough when people like Prince and Stevie Wonder go soft, but at least they have the excuse of being old.

Listen to "Work It Out" for yourself though. You might actually like it. But I'd be willing to bet you'll be shaking your head in disbelief rather than nodding along to the beat with a smile on your face.

St. Vincent "Land Mines"

A member of both The Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Steven's touring-band, 23-year-old singer and multi-instrumentalist Annie Clark, pseudonym St. Vincent, releases her first solo album 'Marry Me' next week. Her brand of Cabaret-Pop is at times reminiscent of Regina Spektor, CocoRosie, Portishead, and the solo work of lead P-Head vocalist Beth Gibbons, amongst others. Her voice is a gorgeous thing, and her song-writing can be both classically beautiful and kitschy, but never overly precocious to the point of annoyance. This track "Land Mines," a smoky slow-burner of a Jazz-Pop torch-song, is one of those "classically beautiful" numbers.

Digitata "Marinos Amores"

I'm pretty sure the sticker affixed to the cover of Digitata's debut CD when it arrived at the radio station a few years back likened it to Gwen Stefani, M.I.A. and Portishead. That was pretty accurate a description of it's mix of downtempo and Electro. Their sophomore album 'Two Daggers,' which just might have the best album cover of the year, still has some of their debut's Electro-isms, but there's a whole lot of dancably poppy, piano-driven Art-Punk flavor added to the mix. It's kind of like a more darkly tinted take on Aqueduct's corny but cutting edge Piano-Pop sound. "Marinos Amores" offers a pretty nice balance of bubbling electronic bass tones, twinkling electric piano, crashing drums, and chirping synthesizer voices.

New Young Pony Club "Hiding on the Staircase"

I've had British "New Rave" poster-children New yong Pony Club's debut 'Fantastic Playroom' for what seems like forever. But I held off posting anything because there was no example of the cover image to be found online and I hate posting tracks to "New Music Monday" with just a picture of the band. Anyway, I think the "New Rave" label is sort of malarky. Sure, some acts are sort of "Ravey," but NYCP ain't really one of 'em. They sound very similar to Cansei De Ser Sexy to me, and both bands give me flashbacks of funky New York Post-Punk acts like Blondie, Talking Heads and the like more than they do "Techno" music. Sure there's a little kinship with the Rave affiliated "Indie Dance" and "Madchester" bands too, but even those bands and their version of club culture grew out of a mixture of UK Post-Punk and the downtown New York scene where Punk and Dance music first met... So whatever. What's not whatever though is the music, which is good. "Hiding on the Staircase" is particularly tough, with tribal rhythms, a plucky bassline, glass bottle percussion, and a really snotty sounding, but quite smart, and subversively sexy, vocal about the voyeurism inherent in living in close-quarters with neighbors.

Gravy Train!!!! "Club Situation" feat. Junior and Jonny Makeup

Oakland, California-based co-ed quartet Gravy Train!!!! is one of the coolest looking bands I've ever seen. They look like a low-rent version of Scissor Sisters, and that's sort of what they sound like as well. Their newest album (their fifth) 'All the Sweet Stuff,' out now on Cochon Records, is basically 1950's style rock, but informed by filthy Electro and Club music, as well as New Wave and Punk Music. It's kind of like the B-52's meets Junior Senior (who they will be on tour with this Summer) with a side order of Sweatheart, and some Big Digits for an appetizer. "Club Situation" is exactly what the title indicates, a club song, about clubbing which interpolates the 'In Living Colour' theme and talks about "Queens" and "Willy Wonka."
