Cheesy titles work best. Bad band names are like an curled finger beckoning. I had to hear what the Test-Icicles sounded like... Morning Wood? I wanted to hear how bad they were. It's like the whole Mike Jones phenomenon. For guaranteed modest popular success, just turn peoples' heads. Car wreck or Supermodel.

I was understandably a little intruiged to hear mc DJ. I don't know if it's pronounced like McStarbucks or like emcee, but he's a young producer here in New York making some nice loose remixes. I've posted a Feist remix (one of three he's done) that he put on his blog last week. Some of his work is hit-or-miss, especially the stuff he does with his cousin, Childish Gambino, but he seems to work like a demon. He posts a new song every few days- so there's a wealth of good material there, including both Sufjan Stevens and Fiona Apple mash/mix/whatever/tribute albums that you should all check out. Enjoy! and thanks to Keter for letting me speak to you all here at Imageyenation.

What might that be? Well, first it would be that the reclusive singer, songwriter and bandleader may make a public appearance at this year's Grammy Awards. It's believed he plans to attend the ceremonies where he will be honored by an all-star tribute featuring John Legend, Maroon 5, will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, among others, performing a medley of Sly and the Family Stone hits. The second, and far more earth-shattering plan the legendary funk inventor is said to have stuffed up his ruffled sleeve though is the rumoured possibility that Sylvester Stewart will in fact reunite with the original members of The Family Stone and perform live for the first time in nearly 20 years at the February 5th music industry awards!

According to several friends and associates, discussions are well underway about a Sly and the Family Stone reunion performance at the Grammy Awards on Feb. 8 in Los Angeles.

It would be Stone's first live performance since 1987, and his first major public appearance since Jan. 12, 1993, when Sly and the Family Stone were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It would also mark the first time since 1971 that the band has played in its original configuration. (Drummer Greg Errico quit the group that year and was soon followed by bass player Larry Graham.)

Now would be as good a time as any for the troubled genius to re-emerge, as there is a documentary about the elusive musician and his band mates in the works and Epic/Legacy has just released an (admittedly pretty terrible) remix/tribute album called 'Different Strokes by Different Folks' featuring a host of modern recording artists remixing and/or raping Sly and the Family Stone classics. Not to mention the fact that from bedroom soultronica crooners to indie pop outfits right on up to some of the biggest songwriters and producers of the day (yes Neptunes, I'm talking about you) his influence on songwriting, and more specifically his trailblazing use of lo-fi electronics, drum machines and the like at a time when such new-fangled apparatus was nearly unheard of, looms larger over the landscape of popular music than ever.

Truth be told, I often like to think that Sly Stone is sitting somewhere in a home studio with his drum machines, synthesizers and other instruments writing socially and musically revolutionary music even now (something I also wish people who came up under Sly's shadow like Prince and Michael Jackson were doing as well, knowing full well that they're not). And I have often had the hope that at some point he'd see through the haze of addiction, misfortune, paranoia and vilification and start releasing that music on his own. Only time will tell if my hopes are founded in reality. But it may be as soon as February 5th that we may all find out whether our hopes for a triumphant Sly Stone return are fulfilled, deferred, or dashed against the rocks of a less than spectacular performance from a warmed over group of formerly vibrant musicians.

Any way you cut it though, this is something to watch out for.

The Barsuk Records website has new music from San Francisco based duo Mates Of State available for download. The song, from their forthcoming third LP 'Bring It Back,' which will be released on compact disc by Barsuk on March 26th and vinyl on Polyvinyl shortly thereafter, is called "Fraud In The '80s" and it's rocky, synthy, and indie-pop kitschy all in one tiny little 128kbps package. It's a really catchy little tune if you ask me, and if the rest of the Mates new record is this dope then they may cement themselves as this year's answer to Aqueduct, another Barsuk act who owned a big portion of 2005 with his catchy, '80s influenced synth-rock. But my talking is pretty much worthless without auditory proof, so just go to the Barsuk download page (because Barsuk doesn't allow external linking to their audio... fix that shit yall... I'm sure all that 'The O.C.' licensing money could easily buy some extra bandwidth), look for the link, and download the damn MP3!

Then keep your eyes peeled and your ears open for Mates Of State's 'Bring It Back,' in stores March 26th on Barsuk records. And try to catch the Mates live if they happen to come to your area, like when they come to The Middle East in Cambridge Massachusetts on March 23rd.

In news that is not suprising to me in any way shape or form, AllHipHop is reporting that a huge group of respected record producers responsible for many of the Bad Boy label's biggest hits are sueing Bad Boy label-head Sean "P. Diddy" Combs for collectively stiffing them for their royalty payments.

"This is not personal against Puff [Combs]," Lord Finesse told AllHipHop.com. "This is just a royalty and publishing situation. A lot of people didn't get paid."

The group of producers are responsible for writing and producing major Bad Boy hits like "Whoa!," "I Love the Dough," "Flava In Ya Ear," "Warning," "Get Down," "I Need a Girl," "Been Around the World," "One More Chance," "Missing You," "Born Again," "Dead Wrong," "Sky's the Limit" and many others.

Producers such as Angela Winbush, Buckwild, Carlos Broady, Clark Kent, Craig Mack, Easy Moe Bee, The Hitmen (which could include any number of name producers who operated under Bad Boy's in-house production squad), Loon, Lord Finesse and others are amongst the group claiming they haven't received royalty statements or payments, in some cases for more than 10 years.

I know that I'm getting old, but despite that fact I still like to think that I'm "with it." I like to think that I'm "in tune" with what "the kids" are "in to." And most of the time I am. But every once in a while I fall behind. Last night was one of those times.

You see, while conversing with Emeyesi about the new season of 'American Idol' on AOL Instant Messenger I got a message from my MySpace buddy Nichole (originator of the "BLAH! CHOCODILES! BLAH! BLAH! AESOP ROCK! AND BUNNY PANCAKES! AND MIDGET SINGERS!" and "I swear it is like crack for your ears" quotes that appear in this site's quote array every now and then) wherein she began spouting bizarre phrases about being "the keeper of the gems." I had no idea what she was talking about, but rather than rock the boat I replied "yes, yes you are." She then asked me if I had heard "the sweater song." Assuming that she meant the Weezer tune I replied "no." She told me to Google the phrase "gem sweater" and I told her "okay, I'll do that when I have some time." Insisting that I hear this "sweater song" now, she said she'd send me a link. When I clicked it I was surprised to find it was in fact not Weezer, but a group of chubby female art students called Leslie and the Ly's who dressed in gold lame and beadazzled sweaters and performed a funky brand of kitschy electro which featured the memorable lyrical proclamation "with these shoulder-pads I have the strength to destroy villages, homes and crops."

After a little click-based investigation I found that the band was in fact based right here in Massachusetts, that it's helmed by Iowa-bred, Boston-educated artist Leslie Hall, that the band had a MySpace page, that they had a couple other videos, and that you could watch all the videos at the AtomFilms website. Most of all though, I was aghast that I was just now discovering the "gem sweater" phenomenon. It was obvious that the band and their video had been around for a while and had made the internet (not to mention print media, and apparently even television) rounds and I just couldn't comprehend how it was possible that I had missed out on it. This was tantamount to Emeyesi's ignorance as to the origins of the legendary "peanut butter jelly time" for chrissake! So, I asked a couple of my friends who are more likely to go clicking "look at this funny video" links that people send them and they hadn't heard or seen it either, which made me feel like a little less of a herb for taking so long to discover Leslie and her "lazer-ball, of lightning, striking your mind."

If, like me, you're aching to make up for lost "gem time" you should think about seeing the band live some time. And luckily enough for us Massholes Leslie and the crew will be presenting us with an opportunity to do just that this month as they'll be performing live at the Lucky Dog Music Hall in Worcester on Monday, January 30th.

The reason I say this is because I once read a review in the 'Daily Collegian' that completely dissed the band. This isn't to say that I read 'Daily Collegian' articles as law, but after I read the review I started to notice that hardly any of my friends shared my admiration for one of the most original bands I've probably ever heard. It always confuses me when good things aren't appreciated. Especially when they've gone above and beyond to prove their worth. The Cake review was for their 2004 release 'Pressure Chief,' which is an amazing album. The jist of the review, labeled Cake as boring and unable to break old album habits. In my opinion Cake isn't dead set on constantly reinventing their sound but they manage to make some of the most original music with each new album.

Cake Discography:

'Motorcade of Generosity' Capricorn 1994
'Fashion Nugget' Capricorn 1996
'Prolonging the Magic' Capricorn 1998
'Comfort Eagle' Columbia 2001
'Pressure Chief' Columbia 2004

Cake "Pretty Pink Ribbon"

Cake will be touring the US the last few weeks of the month of January. They'll be performing right here in Massachusetts, at the Palladium in Worcestor, on January 19th alongside supporting acts Tegan & Sara and Gogol Bordello.

I really should be asleep, not downloading mixtapes at 5:43 in the fucking morning. But for whatever reason I'm not asleep, and I am in fact downloading mixtapes at 5:43 in the fucking morning. At least the first mixtape is sleep themed though, so maybe listening to it will help me get to bed? Who knows!

Regardless, it's fucking dope! It's a 54 minute mix called the "NapStar Mix (Sleep Warm)," and it features a plethora of sleep themed tunes from the likes of Black Sheep, The Beatles, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Weather Report, Prince Paul, Run DMC (in screwed & chopped form no less), The Monkees and a lot more, glued together with a bunch of ill vocal samples and sound-bites. It's really not your typical mixtape (well, it's typical for somebody like me who's known for putting a lot of disparate elements together when I make a mixtape for somebody), but got-damn is it ever fresh! And in hindsight it's not at all sleep-inducing. It was put together by T-One of Slang Rock (formerly Mondrian Sound, who's 'Angels & Insects' compilation featured the best Aesop Rock song of all time, "Bad Karma") in anticipation of his forthcoming LP 'Bedtime,' which, as you might have guessed, is dedicated to sleep, and is slated to feature guests Dres of Black Sheep, AG of D.I.T.C., Prince Po of Organized Konfusion, Mikah9 of Freestyle Fellowship, Truth Enola, Cannibal Ox, UG of Cella Dwellas, Mojo the Cinematic of Dujeous and more! So check the mix, and make sure you keep an eye and ear out for 'Bedtime' some time early this year.

If you're totally not thinking about sleep at all you might be more interested in the newest broken beat mix from ProbeDMS of DMS Country Recordings (who's website needs an update), broken beat act Spymusic and hip-hip act CVees. It's the second mix in his "Smokin' Broken" series entitled, simply, "Smokin' Broken Vol. 2." This one clocks in at a meaty 76 minutes and 45 seconds and features a host of soulful nu jazz and broken beat jams that are certainly far more likely to get you up and shaking your ass before they put you to sleep. Although, burning a bunch of energy by dancing around your apartment is bound to make you feel like laying down, so it's all a big circle of life... or some shit.

Either way you've got a couple hours worth of dope sounds to download here that could be the perfect soundtrack for your life this morning. Whether you plan on "getting down," or laying down.

Cops and fireman are known for retiring from crime-fighting and element-battling to open a bar in their old-age. But what's a group like Tha Alkaholiks supposed to do when they retire? They certainly can't open a fucking bar, can they? I wouldn't think so. Regardless, that's a quandary for Alkaholiks group-members Tash, J-Ro and E-Swift to contemplate, not me, because as of January 24th, the release date of their 5th and final album 'Fire Water,' the veteran group is calling it quits. They'll be going out in style too, with guest producers Danger Mouse and Evidence contributing beats in addition to the work of in-house producers E-Swift and J-Ro. The album will also be sporting a guest-shot from original drunkie King Tee, who introduced the world to Tha Liks on his underground hit "Got It Bad Yall" over a decade ago.

The first single from 'Fire Water,' "The Flute Song (LaLaLa)" backed with "Party Ya Ass Off," is a double-shot of drunk funk in the same vein as most of their classic singles. The production, courtesy of E-Swift, knocks with that slow-flow feel-good funk tinged with slightly spaced-out inebriated paranoia that has become the group's trademark. And emcees Tash and J-Ro are flowing like... well... likwit... just like they always have. Check both tracks out for yourself right now in streaming audio.

So don't forget, the bar loses it's liquor license and closes forever on January 24th when Tha Alkaholiks drop 'Fire Water' on Waxploitation/Koch Records.

Three 6 Mafia's Juicy J on "Half On A Sack":

Nose all runny
Find a snow bunny
Take her to the crib
Make her drink cummy
I'm from the hood I ain't never did this
But now I can say that I done done it

Cocaine Blaine
That's my dawg
I called him up
To house this slut
We gon' fuck her in the back of the bus
And fill her nose up full of that dust

Three 6 Mafia wild on tour
Whoopin' these niggas and fuckin' these whores
In the bathroom 'bout two whole hours
Gettin' real high passed out on the floor

Fuck that shit
Niggas on the frame
Take 'em one on one
Back in the game
Back on the street
Back on the strip
Lookin' for a freak to run a train

With the modern recording industry functioning the way it does rockin' bands are sort of a rare commodity in today's marketplace. A rockin' band that releases two equally dope (at least according to Emeyesi) albums within the same 365-day span is even rarer. When such a rockin' band is fronted by a dude who looks like a slightly less tall, less hefty, bedreaded version of former Imageyenation staffer and life-long Urban Alternatives crew-member Masir Williams the existence of said band is virtually miraculous. British post-punk outfit Bloc Party is just such a band though, and after a banner 2005 they're kicking off the new year the right way; by releasing a live concert film on DVD!

The film, called 'God Bless Bloc Party,' is a documentary chronicling Bloc Party's second US tour featuring a backstage look at the band, interview footage with the band-members and live performance footage from shows in Los Angeles and France. You can check out a trailer for the film (in streaming Quicktime format) right here to get a taste for what the rockumentary has to offer. The DVD, which is being released via Vice Recordings, will only be available at the Think Indie network of independent retailers as well as the big faceless corporations Tower and Virgin on January 17th.

The newly initiated MP3 Blog, titled "Up Your Jaxxy," at the Vice Recordings website is also offering a download for a remix of Bloc Party's "2 More Years" from production duo MSTRKRFT which is the "dance music" alias of Death From Above 1979's Jesse Keeler and Al-P, the producer behind the band's 'You're A Woman...' LP. Download that at the link below.

Bloc Party "2 More Years (MSTRKRFT Remix)"

And don't forget to check for the 'God Bless Bloc Party' DVD in select stores on Vice Recordings on January 17th.

As a singer he had era-spanning hits, from the "jazz fusion" of David Axelrod's tenure at Capitol Records in the 1960's, to the chart dominating disco of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's "Philly sound" at Philadelphia International Records in the 1970's. As a philanthropist and humanitarian he founded his own long-running "Parade Of Stars" telethon to benefit the United Negro College Fund for whom he raised millions of dollars. In recent years he was plagued with cancer of the lungs and brain, for which he had been hospitalized at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California since December. It was at that same hospital where Lou Rawls passed away while receiving treatment early this morning. He was 72 years old.

"What I really loved about Lou was how his voice was so unique," Kenny Gamble, who with his partner Leon Huff wrote "You'll Never Find," told The Associated Press.

"The other thing was that he had a sense of community. Thousands and thousands of young kids benefited from his celebrity."

"Lou Rawls was one of the music world's most versatile vocalists," said Recording Academy President Neil Portnow in a statement from the organization, which awards the annual Grammys. "His deep, smooth, soulful style exemplified his classy elegance and made him one of the most recognizable voices anywhere. And his philanthropic efforts on behalf of many charitable causes further displayed his passion and commitment to helping others through music. We have lost a true musical pioneer, but his legacy will continue to inspire us all."

Rather than go digigng through my records to find some of the old Capitol Records 45's or Philadelphia International LP's of Lou's which I own from which to cull a couple MP3's for you to listen to in remembrance of Mr. Rawls, I turned my chair around and grabbed the recent David Axelrod retrospective 'The Edge: David Axelrod at Capitol Records 1966-1970' which happens to feature a couple of crucial sides Lour recorded with Axe back in the day. One is the spoken-word piece "Lifetime Monologue," which is widely appreciated for it's heavy breakbeat, and is thematically appropriate considering the days events. The other is Lou's cover of the Blood Sweat & Tears tune "You've Made Me So Very Happy," which was famously sampled by De La Soul on their cult-classic 'Buhloon Mindstate' album, and is equally appropriate, because Lou's voice certainly made a lot of people very happy over the years.

Lou Rawls "Lifetime Monologue"

So enjoy the sounds in honor of an incredible talent who will certainly be missed.

It came out overseas way back in 2004 and has has since spawned four Top 20 singles in the UK.

It's been a favorite on our Urban Alternatives radio show for a few months now and is featured prominently on our "Best Of 2005" list right here at Imageyenation.

And now, thanks to RCA Records, 'Destroy Rock & Roll,' the bubblingly funky debut full-length from Scottish poptronica producer Mylo, will finally see an official release here in the states on February 7th 2006!

Growing up on the remote Isle of Skye, Myles MacInnes a.k.a. Mylo, submerged himself in music. The isolation gave him a unique perspective that energized his creative juices and gave way to the heart-pounding Destroy Rock Roll. Previously released in the U.K. on Breastfed Records, Mylo's own imprint, Destroy Rock Roll is a lush body of work containing a multitude of textures. The landscape of the album is vast, from the feel good sway of 'In My Arms' to the funky body moving staccato of 'Drop the Pressure'. The February 7th U.S. release will feature exclusive music and the new U.K single 'Doctor Pressure' (Mylo vs. Miami Sound Machine) which entered the U.K. chart at #3.

To coincide with the stateside release of 'Destroy Rock & Roll' Mylo and his band, who apparently put on a swell live show, will embark on a US tour as well. They've got a date scheduled at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston on February 12th, so I would assume there's a chance they might be coming to a city near you too!

One of the best records of 2005 (even though it came out in 2004 like I said... and is coming out again in 2006) 'Destroy Rock & Roll' hits store shelves here in the US on February 7th on Breastfed/RCA Records.
