After a full year packed with hype, appearances on hundreds of magazine covers, love from thousands of bloggers, and endless message board debates over her "authenticity" and the real "worth" of her "art," you might think that we here at Imageyenation would be so tired of Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam (known to most of you as M.I.A.) that we'd never mention her again. But lemme tell you right now, you would be dead wrong chief. Ya see, she's still one of the hottest babes on the planet (just look at that beautiful kisser), her album 'Arular' still rocks whatever speakers happen to be connected to whatever audio playback device it's spinning in (or on), and now, she's finally breaking through to the everyday American consumer by lending her breakout tune "Galang" to a Honda Civic commercial!

I almost didn't believe it myself the first time I heard "Galang" coming out of my television. I looked up, and saw that the tune was set to heavily stylized animated images of... a flying car? "Holy shit, M.I.A. is in a Honda commercial" I yelled out to the the non-existent co-occupants of my apartment, still not totally sure that what I was seeing was real. When I met up with Emeyesi a few hours later the first thing we said to each other was "Did you see the new M.I.A. commer... " laughing at our own excitement over something so benign. But what can we say? We love it when artists we champion actually make a buck (see also: Aqueduct's recent appearance in a Jaguar ad), even if it's by "selling out" to a heartless corporation. Anyway, if you haven't seen the clip on an actual television yet, you can check it out in streaming format here if you're interested.

M.I.A. "Galang (Honda Civic commercial)"

Additionally, some new remixes (courtesy of System Of A Down member Serj Tankian, and Reggae producer Dave Kelly) of "Galang" have popped up as well.

M.I.A. "Galang (Serj Tankian Remix)"

M.I.A. "Galang (Dave Kelly Remix feat. Cham)"

But I must admit, I favor my own "mash up" (which I made for my forthcoming all blend/mash up edition of our Undertones podcast series) of the track over any of the remixes I've heard.

M.I.A. vs. Ghostface Killah "Watch How We Galang-A-Lang 'Em (El Keter Mash Up)"

And if she needed another feather in her cap, Ms. Arulpragasam has even roused the ire of real-life, honest to gosh rapper! It seems emo-rap posterboy Slug of Atmosphere (who's new album 'You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having' is really dope) took some time out to complain that she's stolen all of his fans, and, much like the aforementioned internet message board blabbermouths (who incidentally are just as likely to debate his authenticity and artistic worth), questioned her importance, longevity and real ability in a recent interview with some Pennsylvania newspaper. My guess is that he's just salty because he's not the one taking her to bed every night. But I could be wrong.

And that, is probably the last you'll hear from me about M.I.A. until I eventually get some news about her forthcoming Timbaland produced major label debut for Interscope Records... maybe.

If you missed out on the MP3 when I posted it a couple months back here's your second chance to get down with "Kryptonite" by the Purple Ribbon All-Stars, the first official single from Outkast member Big Boi's Purple Ribbon custom label!

The track is a monster, with ill synths, a chugging drum machine beat and vocals from the underrated Killer Mike, new Purple Ribbon signees C-Bone & Rock D, and label founder Big Boi himself.

And though the afforementioned MP3 is long gone, you can peep the tune now in streaming audio!

The label's roster already includes veteran artists Killer Mike, Bubba Sparxxx and Sleepy Brown, as well as newcomers Janelle Monae, Koncrete, Supa Nate, C-Bone, Rock D, and Scar. At least two full length releases should drop from the label within the year, a Purple Ribbon All-Stars compilation titled 'Big Boi Presents...Got Purp? Vol. 2' and the label debut from Bubba Sparxxx.

One of only a handful of modern artists to actually possess soul in a tangible sense, singer, songwriter, producer, "sexy man," and "troubled genius," D'Angelo has been hospitalized in Richmond, Virgina and is currently undergoing treatment for critical injuries he sustained in a car crash last week.

According to a statement from the Virginia State Police, the SUV in which D'Angelo was traveling swerved off a road and into fence before flipping over.

The artist was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car. According to police, it is not yet known if D'Angelo was driving; another person in the vehicle, Lynne Sellers, was also injured in the accident but the status of her condition was unknown.

My initial reaction (fueled by rumours of him being generally unhappy and uncomfortable with his image and public identity) upon reading of this was to declare it a suicide attempt. But maybe that's just me transposing my own depression on to homeboy? I mean, he has had brushes with the law involving drugs and alcohol in the past. And the presence of another person in the automobile during the crash could indicate that it was just partying gone wrong. But then, soul singers are notorious for getting into some ill shit with their ladies, so it could go either way.

Regardless, it would be an enormous blow to music lovers everywhere if we were to lose such a genuinely gifted musician, especially to such pointless circumstances.

Emcee Gift of Gab and DJ/producer Chief Xcel of Blackalicious have a new album, titled 'The Craft,' set for release September 27th on Epitaph Records. Gab himself has said no less of the disc than "It's my favorite of all of our albums, I think that it's our best album." And me? I'd be inclined to agree. Though the singles so far, "Rhythm Sticks" and "Your Move," have felt sorta lukewarm, the album as a whole is nothing but straight heat. Guests include George Clinton, Floetry, P.E.A.C.E. (of Freestyle Fellowship), and Quannum family members Lateef The Truth Speaker, Lyrics Born, Pigeon John, and the Lifesavas.

Our boys VURSATYLE and Jumbo the Garbageman of said Lifesavas even make an appearance in the brand new video clip for "Your Move," the second single so far from the album. And since you'd expect nothing less, you can check out this very same video right here and right now.

And whatever you do, don't forget to run out to your nearest record shop next Tuesday to cop 'The Craft' as soon as it hits the racks!

Whether it's proof that Sean Carter is indeed creating a new "underground" branch of Def Jam or not remains to be seen... But it looks as though the "talks" mentioned between him and The Roots were successful enough, as Roots drummer ?uestlove has confirmed that the hip-hop band has indeed signed to Def Jam and will be dropping an album on the label in a few short months.

"It's a legacy, it's historical," ?uest continued. "Of course, for the Roots, the most important thing for us is providing grade-quality, hip-hop connoisseur music. So we're very excited to have a new home. We're gonna maximize on it. [The new album] is 15 songs, it's gonna be our darkest, craziest record since [2002's] Phrenology, [1996's] Illadelph Halflife. This is a dirty, dirty record — a raw-sounding record."

Recording on the new LP, tentatively titled 'Game Theory,' is nearly complete, and the band is eyeing a release date in February or March. Guests so far include Mos Def, Talib Kweli and Saigon.

A prolific singer, songwriter, and producer, Willie Hutch died of undisclosed causes in Houston, Texas this passed Tuesday.

The 59 year old industry veteran was best known for his work at Motown, which included producing a number of hits for the Jackson 5, as well as his work on the blaxploitation-era soundtracks for the films 'Foxy Brown' and 'The Mack,' the latter of which produced his most remembered hit, the heavily sampled "Brothers Gonna Work It Out."

Certainly one of many black performers from the '70s to influence modern popular music (by way of the vinyl-centric cultures of hip-hop, disco, and even house), Willie Hutch was also a direct influence on his nephew Big Hutch a.k.a. Cold 187um of seminal gangsta-rap group Above The Law, one of the architects of what would come to be known as the "g-funk" (or gangsta funk) sound.

Most recently Willie Hutch could be heard on the song "Treat Me," from German downtempo duo Boozoo Bajou's 'Dust My Broom' LP, which was released in August by Studio !K7.

Our close personal friend Emeyesi was supposed to post about this video clip from Canadian hip-hop superstar K-Os for his track "Man I Used To Be" ( which happens to be my personal favorite track from last year's 'Joyful Rebellion' disc ) a long fuckin' time ago. Unfortunately, he ( like most of the people on the Imageyenation "staff" not named "El Keter ben Tzadik" ) is a shiftless slack-ass, so he never got around to actually doing it. And that is why I am posting it now!

Like his previous videos, this one features a bunch of fresh dance footage from various b-boys throughout. Especially eye-catching is a street-scene featuring a dope "confrontation" between two dancers portraying a homelass cat and a suited-up businessman. It's top quality in both concept and execution, and it brings the now ubiquitous b-boy presence in his vidoes out of the realm of a mere showcase for the dancer's skills and actually incorporates it into the "story" being told by the visuals.

Pontificating aside, it was a cool clip when Emeyesi said he was gonna post about, and it's a cool clip now, so watch it!

In light of BET's refusal to play Little Brother's "Lovin' It" video for being "too intelligent," one of the heads on the Justus League message boards has started a campaign to petition BET to discontinue it's practice of banning anything but the most commercial, and oftentimes most ignorant, of hip-hop videos from it's programs.

We, the Hip Hop and Black community, are asking that BET and its staff, reconsider the videos that you play on your network. As, of recent, a video titled "Lovin' It" by a group that goes by the name of Little Brother signed to record label, Atlantic Records, was banned from your network because it was labeled "too intelligent" by your program director. If "Lovin' It" is too intelligent, then what should we be teaching the black youth? Supposedly, your network would rather teach black males to swipe credit cards in between a black woman's buttocks as depicted in Nelly's "Tip Drill" which is a video that was featured in heavy rotation on your television program titled "Uncut". We are disgusted and appalled at your decision to stop the airing of such videos as Little Brother's video "Lovin' It", depriving the black people and Hip Hop community of a balance in what type of music is out there. We hope BET and your staff reconsider your decision in the airing of Little Brother's "Lovin It". Thank you for your time!

If you're even remotely concerned that such backwards standards are being applied by an entertainment network that supposedly caters to an ethnic minority that has historically been denied educational opportunities due to institutionalized racism then feel free to view, and sign, the petition online.

Lately, every time I leave my house to go out to a "night-spot" I've been confronted with a gaggle of light-skinned black dudes rocking locks, little scruffy beards, and carribean influenced bohemian fashions. And I must admit, I'm totally convinced that this sudden proliferation of Rasta-chic poseurs is in fact a direct result of the new-found popularity of that youngest of Robert Nesta's musically inclined progeny, Damian Marley, and his enormous hit "Welcome To Jamrock."

The track has been bubbling for a long while now, but recent months have seen it totally blowing up on radio and video. Nobody's been more surprised at it's success as me. Though I was immediately taken by the tune the first time I heard it, and championed it at every opportunity, I just didn't think that America, as infatuated as it is with glitzy-rap, and r&b, and the sterile, computerized riddims of modern commercial dancehall, would go for a slower, tougher, dirtier, roots influenced reggae tune such as "Jamrock." Boy was I wrong! And I couldn't be happier, since "Welcome To Jamrock" is hands down one of the toughest reggae tunes I've heard in damn near a decade, and I'm almost always happy when something I dig so much breaks through to the wider consciousness.

I'm still not too happy about all these wannabe mini-Marley's taking up stool space every time I go to the damn club, but that's neither here nor there.

What is both here and there though is the impending release of Marley's full-length album, titled ( not surprisingly ) 'Welcome To Jamrock,' September 13th, on Universal Records. For a sneak-peek ( or listen, as it were ) at the album check out the 'Welcome To Jamrock' media player, which features five full length audio tracks, the full "Welcome To Jamrock" video, and some other goodies.

Or, if you're interested in hearing what young Mr. Marley has to say for himself, you can watch "A Private Conversation with Damian Marley," a streaming Windows Media video documentary/interview where he discusses the meaning behind the name "Jamrock," his album, his hit tune, his family, his place in music, and more.

With the release of his sophomore full-length 'Still Means Something' still a ways off, Fort Wayne, Indiana's favorite bearded emcee Sankofa is doing everything he can to keep his "buzz" strong. To that end, an album sampler is already floating around the web ( thanks in no small part to my posting it a few weeks back ) and people are finally starting to realize that this guy is dope, and not just because he dresses up as a ninja and wears bizarre headwear in his promo photos either. The fact of the matter is the dude is just plain dope, and he's incredibly prolific. Which is something I learned through numerous collabortive efforts ( which I'm sure you will hear... someday ), and which you are about to learn by way of yet another post featuring new and exclusive promotional audio!

Not content with letting the snippet sampler speak for itself, dude got his hands on an old Nine instrumental ( "We Play for Keeps" from the 'Cloud Nine' LP ), laced it with an ill "freestyle," and threw in a little promotional hyperbole for the forthcoming 'Still Means Something' for good measure. The result is sheer lyrical insanity. And I suggest you give it a listen right the duece now!

Sankofa "We Play For Keeps Freestyle"

Real Audio

When you're done listening, pick your jaw up off the floor, visit his website and try to get yourself one of the dope "logoman" t-shirt's he recently had printed. That way you'll look cool like me ( since I already have one of the shirts... duh ) while you're waiting for 'Still Means Something' to drop.

Though I'm sure a mix like this would have been perfect to listen to last night or earlier today when nothing else was on television besides the Jerry Lewis telethon, my motto remains "better late than never."

The mix in question is a blend of hip-hop, soul, jazzy flavors, and broken-beat shit called "Houston We Got A Solution," and it comes courtesy of Houston, Texas based ( by way of Philly and the planet of Brooklyn ) producer/emcee Jneiro Jarel.

The mix, which is available as a streaming MP3, or a downloadable MP3 ( right click and "save as" ), features material from Build An Ark, Rich Medina, Vinia Mojica, Count Bass D, Paul Wall, and a bunch of Jneiro exclusives.

But since the tracklist sort of speaks for itself, just go ahead and take a peek at it.

Jneiro Jarel 'Houston We Got A Solution' tracklist:

1. Build An Ark Remixes "Vibe of The Tribe (Jneiro Jarel Remix)" (Plug Research)

2. Build An Ark Remixes "You've Gotta Have Freedom (J. Rocc Remix)" (Plug Research)

3. Label Who? Presents: Beat Journey "Brazilliant Thought" (Label Who)

4. Shape of Broad Minds "AKA Mr. Mole" (Label Who/Unreleased)

5. Recloose "Dust (Rocque Wun Mix Produced By Jneiro Jarel) (PeaceFrog)

6. Rich Medina "I Can't Hold Back No More feat. Sy Smith" (Kindred Spirits US)

7. Jneiro Jarel "Big Bounce Theory Part 2 Ffeat. Vinia Mojica" (Ropeadope/Kindred Spirits)

8. Shape of Broad Minds "Dark Surroundings" (Label Who/Unreleased)

9. Shape of Broad Minds "Man Whut it Do?" (Label Who/Unreleased)

10. Paul Wall "They Don't Know feat. Mike Jones" (Paid In Full)

11. Champion Souls "Holdin' On (Dr. Who Dat? Remix Produced By Jneiro Jarel)" (Sunshine/Unreleased)

12. Capital Peoples "Capital Peoples Intro/Ghetto Dreaming" (Label Who/ Unreleased)

13. Paul Wall "Sittin' Sidewayz feat. Big Pokey of the S.U.C." (Asylum)

14. Rich Medina "Blues Baby feat. Jneiro Jarel" (Kindred Spirits US)

15. Breakthrough "Not Tommorow But feat. Jneiro Jarel & Dr. Who Dat?" (Jazzy Sport)

16. Shape Of Broad Minds "Abstract Forms" (Label Who/Unreleased)

17. Label Who? Presents: Beat Journey "BBoy Portriat In Spain" (Label Who)

19. Jneiro Jarel "Let's Get Wit It feat. Jawwaad, Aahtue A/K/A Alix Da Great & Nahuma Holiday" (Ropeadope/Kindred Spirits)

20. Count Bass D "Down Easy" (Ramp)

21. Shape of Broad Minds "Boyond Tomorrow feat. Velben" (Label Who/Unreleased)

22. Jneiro Jarel "Kelly Drive" (Unreleased)

So you see, even if you sat bored stiff watching a fat Jew ( not me ) ask you for cash all day, or had nothing fresh to pump on the system at your Labor Day barbeque, it's still a betterment to your life to know that this mix exists at all, even if an earlier discovery of that fact could have proved more beneficial.

New Jersey based emcee Dave Ghetto came on the scene back in 1998 ( under the name AZ-IZ ) as a member of the Fondle 'Em Records crew Nuthouse. Since then he's released a number of projects, collaborating with producer Chops of the Mountain Brothers and others, as well as a few solo singles. After much delay, his debut full-length, titled 'Lovelife?,' which features production from J Dilla, DJ Spinna, ILLmind, Tony Galvin, Erik Rico, Khrysis, and Square4, is finally set for release towards the end of October on Counterflow Records!

A 'Lovelife?' sampler MP3 is available for download courtesy of the label, which you can right click and "save as" to download.

Dave Ghetto "Lovelife? Sampler" [MP3]

The first single is the 9th Wonder produced "Hey Young World Part 2" featuring guest vocals from femcee Mystic, and singing courtesy of Little Brother member Phonte. And it also happens to be available as a downloadble MP3 as well ( the same downloading rules apply )!

Dave Ghetto feat. Mystic & Phonte "Hey Young World Part 2" [MP3]

But that's not all! Apparently DG and his label are posessed by the spirit of generosity, because they're offering two other album cuts, the ILLMind produced "Day In And Day Out," and the Square4 produced "Spread The Light," up for download too!
