EDGAR ALLEN FLOE

'True Links'

MCEO

The members of North Carolina's Justus League crew just keep crankin' out that soulful, boom-bap, hip-hop shit. Releases from Foreign Exchange, Rapper Big Pooh, Median, L.E.G.A.C.Y., producer 9th Wonder ( alongside Duck Down general Buckshot ), the Away Team, Spectac, and Splash, have all made significant noise for the collective over the last year or two. And the crew's old-heads Cesar Comanche and Little Brother have both just released landmark full-length projects of their own as well. So, one might think that the Justus League family of artists may be stretching themselves a little thin right bout now, right? But not so, and as a matter of fact the various members of the posse just keep stepping up out of the shadows with solid rap records again and again. Case in point being longtime JL member Edgar Allen Floe, and his new EP 'True Links.'

Flexing straightforward vocab, uncomplicated wordplay and a remorselessly inflectionless monotone delivery, Edgar Allen's voice and flow could easily draw comparisons to true-school heroes such as Large Professor, Edo. G, Masta Ace, Guru of Gang Starr, CL Smooth, and even Eric Sermon & Parrish Smith of EPMD, who all brandished similar styles. And such comparisons would certainly not be without specious evidentiary proofs, as song titles like "Back In Time" ( a slowed down, bass-heavy Khrysis production where he reminisces back on everything from golden-era hip-hop to ancient video game 'Mr. Doo,' ), and lyrics about suckers who "talk shit about the pioneers" ( delivered over a disco-ey, vocal-sample-fueled, Illmind produced, bounce-clap groove on "I For An I" ) make it pretty clear that not only does E A Floe have an affinity for that "back in the day shit," but he considers himself, and his crew torchbearers of that by-gone era's spirit and style.

As such, only a handful of tracks on the disc ( which, not surprisingly, happen to be the ones produced by JL crew-members 9th Wonder, Khrysis, and to a certain extent, extended JL fam Illmind ) bear the obvious stamp of what has become the very recognizable signature sound of the Justus League. Burgeoning production superstar 9th Wonder contributes two such selections, "Faith In Love," which features chopped horn samples, bouncing sub-bass, and one of those now ubiquitous soulful vocal samples over shuffle-step kick drums and cracking snares, and "The Great Escape," a synthesizer and horn sample fueled head-nodder that has "late night drive" written all over it. The former finds E A Floe mushing critics, internet blabbermouths ( hey man, take it easy now! ) and new-jacks, proclaiming that "the new Mecca is the Carolinas," and asking the real true-school heads to get on board and "kill all the hate, for hip-hop's sake," while Justus Leaguers Median and L.E.G.A.C.Y. join the proceedings on the latter for a verbal breakdown of everything it takes to make it, and maybe attain a position of respect and leadership, in the hip-hop game.

The remainder of the disc finds Floe reaching out to other beatmakers who, though they are still loosely affiliated with the JL crew, don't necessarily favor the patented Fruity Loops powered production formula of a 9th Wonder or Khrysis. In fact, the work presented by producers Obsidian Blue, DJ Forge ( of Forge & Amen ) and Floe himself ( credited to his alias Slycemysta ) lean more towards styles pioneered by hip-hop maestro's of the past more than anything else. On "Timelife" ( and no, it's not about the publishing conglomerate behind all those late-night television book offers ) newcomer Obsidian Blue lays down a track comprised of atmospheric flute & string loops, dreamy harp plucks, chimes, delicate keys, neck-snapping drums and warm bass programming for E A Floe's introspective socio-political meanderings, resulting in a joint that could easily pass for the type of laid-back tune one might expect Buckwild to lace up a mid-nineties release from Mic Geronimo or some such emcee with. DJ Forge opts for a more up-tempo, celebratory vibe, replete with funky chicken scratch guitar loops and horn stabs on "The Formula 2005," the first, and arguably strongest, full track on the disc, where the combination of Floe's vocal performance and the groovy feel-good production just might give heads flashbacks of legendary Main Source front-man Large Professor, most especially the track "Bonafied Funk," his well-received collaboration with the Brand New Heavies. And when E A Floe steps behind the boards for himself on "Livelyhood," a musical command to "liven it up," he just continues the listener's trip back in time as he drops a heavily filtered bassline, a basic boom-bap drum track, a rollicking piano & horn loop, and echoed horn stabs that pay tribute to... well... pretty much every producer who made a hip-hop record between 1992 and 1995 really.

What some listeners may find surprising about 'True Links' is how well it's exhibition of Edgar's retrospective tendencies demonstrates the vital link between the hip-hop of yesteryear and what the Justus League is doing today. The "old school but new school" beats and rhymes presented by Edgar and his collaborators actually make it easier to see that these guys aren't just wearing their influences on their sleeve, going out of their way to imitate their heroes, or making a feeble ( and misguided ) attempt to resurrect a fabled form of "dead" art called hip-hop. They know what so many other people don't seem to, that hip-hop is in fact alive! That it's not a thing you go look at in a museum, or some fabulous legend full of dead Kings and long forgotten Gods to be passed down through the generations. They know because they, very simply, make hip-hop records. And it's evident that they don't make them like they used to either. No, they make them like some of us always have, and hopefully always will. So though it's far from being an undisputed classic, and it's certainly not the type of revolutionary piece of music that could spur an elevation of the art-form, Edgar Allen Floe's 'True Links' is just the type of record that keeps hip-hop alive, because it is live hip-hop.

Today, my sister wanted me to look for a book for her online.

This prompted me to go to Nerve.com, which lead me to Heavy.com.

There I found a couple of videos I wanted to share with you.

CHEWBACCA!!!!

In an effort to bolster their bullpen Da Sawks aquired the left handed Chewbacca from the Kashyyyk Wookies. Terms of the deal are unknown as of now but I am sure that he didn't come cheap. His agent Han Solo has not returned my calls for more information.

This signing comes just as the Museum of Science in Boston is premiering it's "STAR WARS: Where Science Meets Imagination" exhibit. The exhibit opens on October 27th and will run until April 30th of 2006. Look for the crew of Imageyenation to take a lil day trip out to Boston and check this damn thing out. Who knows, maybe we'll run into Chewy.

The world's first robot baby was delivered yesterday. It's name is iBaby and hopefully if it's mother's robotic womb is up to it there will be hundreds of thousands of iBabys hitting shelves just in time for the holidays. It'll make a great stocking stuffer.

In other news iBaby's father has been hospitaized due to a system crash. Doctor Norton said he will be back on his robotic feet in no time. No word on robot grandman and grandpa, who are down in Florida enjoying their retirement.

Moral-Crusader/Gambling-Addicted-Reactionary-Right-Wing-Jerk William Bennet showed his compassionate conservatism on his syndicated politically-pornographic talk show yesterday. You see, Big Bill really likes black folks.

Addressing a caller's suggestion that the "lost revenue from the people who have been aborted in the last 30 years" would be enough to preserve Social Security's solvency, radio host and former Reagan administration Secretary of Education Bill Bennett dismissed such "far-reaching, extensive extrapolations" by declaring that if "you wanted to reduce crime ... if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down." Bennett conceded that aborting all African-American babies "would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do," then added again, "but the crime rate would go down."

Emphasis mine.

As a kid - GI JOE was my shit. I had like 50 of those guys and a dozen vehicles and I would play with my Beachhead and my Serpentor, and of course my Golobulus, almost every day. Watching episodes of the cartoon is what made me into the Good American I am today.

But, man, I would have been terrified if I was hanging out with my boys and all of sudden some muscular Indian or moustachioed fellow in a helmet flew out from behind some trees and tried helping us in our time of need.

Anyway, these parodies of the infamous "And knowing is half the battle" segments are priceless. Check out "Dance" and "I Knew Your Mother."

Sounds like a record label...or some black metal fusion band right? Well it's fancy talk for "gaint-man-eating squid". Well maybe it's not man eating, but I'll be damned if I didn't see one of these attack a guy on a deep sea fishing escapade off the Cape I went on many years ago. For the record screw those damn deep sea fishing trips. What a rip off. 6 hours out. 6 hours in. Leave at 6am. Float out to the middle of the Atlantic to stare at the water all day while everyone but you catches a sea creature. Not fun. Anyway two Japanese researchers have captured an adult giant squid on camera. *Enter joke here* Folks across the globe have been trying to catch one on film for years and these two knuckleheads did it with ease. Look for Mr. El Keter and I to haul in a sasquatch any day now.

After a full year packed with hype, appearances on hundreds of magazine covers, love from thousands of bloggers, and endless message board debates over her "authenticity" and the real "worth" of her "art," you might think that we here at Imageyenation would be so tired of Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam (known to most of you as M.I.A.) that we'd never mention her again. But lemme tell you right now, you would be dead wrong chief. Ya see, she's still one of the hottest babes on the planet (just look at that beautiful kisser), her album 'Arular' still rocks whatever speakers happen to be connected to whatever audio playback device it's spinning in (or on), and now, she's finally breaking through to the everyday American consumer by lending her breakout tune "Galang" to a Honda Civic commercial!

I almost didn't believe it myself the first time I heard "Galang" coming out of my television. I looked up, and saw that the tune was set to heavily stylized animated images of... a flying car? "Holy shit, M.I.A. is in a Honda commercial" I yelled out to the the non-existent co-occupants of my apartment, still not totally sure that what I was seeing was real. When I met up with Emeyesi a few hours later the first thing we said to each other was "Did you see the new M.I.A. commer... " laughing at our own excitement over something so benign. But what can we say? We love it when artists we champion actually make a buck (see also: Aqueduct's recent appearance in a Jaguar ad), even if it's by "selling out" to a heartless corporation. Anyway, if you haven't seen the clip on an actual television yet, you can check it out in streaming format here if you're interested.

M.I.A. "Galang (Honda Civic commercial)"

Real Media

Windows Media

Additionally, some new remixes (courtesy of System Of A Down member Serj Tankian, and Reggae producer Dave Kelly) of "Galang" have popped up as well.

M.I.A. "Galang (Serj Tankian Remix)"

M.I.A. "Galang (Dave Kelly Remix feat. Cham)"

But I must admit, I favor my own "mash up" (which I made for my forthcoming all blend/mash up edition of our Undertones podcast series) of the track over any of the remixes I've heard.

M.I.A. vs. Ghostface Killah "Watch How We Galang-A-Lang 'Em (El Keter Mash Up)"

And if she needed another feather in her cap, Ms. Arulpragasam has even roused the ire of real-life, honest to gosh rapper! It seems emo-rap posterboy Slug of Atmosphere (who's new album 'You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having' is really dope) took some time out to complain that she's stolen all of his fans, and, much like the aforementioned internet message board blabbermouths (who incidentally are just as likely to debate his authenticity and artistic worth), questioned her importance, longevity and real ability in a recent interview with some Pennsylvania newspaper. My guess is that he's just salty because he's not the one taking her to bed every night. But I could be wrong.

And that, is probably the last you'll hear from me about M.I.A. until I eventually get some news about her forthcoming Timbaland produced major label debut for Interscope Records... maybe.

Did you ever think the Empress would do a blog on sports?

No?

I didn't either, but I woke up this morning to a NY newscaster reporting that, "Derek Jeter ( The Sexy Yankee ) has received hate mail." Mail that called him a "traitor to his race" for dating white women. Mail that threatened to shoot or set him on fire if he didnt stop dating white women.

Can I ask, what race is he a "traitor" to exactly?

He is bi-racial, multi-ethnic, or culturally diverse. ( Whatever term you want to use. )

So, which race is he betraying?

If he's already of two races, why can't he date both races and all the others out there?

I know I am asking these questions of the mostly intelligent specimens of humankind. However, maybe there is a village idiot that would like to respond.

If you missed out on the MP3 when I posted it a couple months back here's your second chance to get down with "Kryptonite" by the Purple Ribbon All-Stars, the first official single from Outkast member Big Boi's Purple Ribbon custom label!

The track is a monster, with ill synths, a chugging drum machine beat and vocals from the underrated Killer Mike, new Purple Ribbon signees C-Bone & Rock D, and label founder Big Boi himself.

And though the afforementioned MP3 is long gone, you can peep the tune now in streaming audio!

At least two full length releases should drop from the label within the year, a Purple Ribbon All-Stars compilation titled 'Big Boi Presents...Got Purp? Vol. 2' and the label debut from Bubba Sparxxx.

One of only a handful of modern artists to actually possess soul in a tangible sense, singer, songwriter, producer, "sexy man," and "troubled genius," D'Angelo has been hospitalized in Richmond, Virgina and is currently undergoing treatment for critical injuries he sustained in a car crash last week.

According to a statement from the Virginia State Police, the SUV in which D'Angelo was traveling swerved off a road and into fence before flipping over.

The artist was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car. According to police, it is not yet known if D'Angelo was driving; another person in the vehicle, Lynne Sellers, was also injured in the accident but the status of her condition was unknown.

My initial reaction (fueled by rumours of him being generally unhappy and uncomfortable with his image and public identity) upon reading of this was to declare it a suicide attempt. But maybe that's just me transposing my own depression on to homeboy? I mean, he has had brushes with the law involving drugs and alcohol in the past. And the presence of another person in the automobile during the crash could indicate that it was just partying gone wrong. But then, soul singers are notorious for getting into some ill shit with their ladies, so it could go either way.

Regardless, it would be an enormous blow to music lovers everywhere if we were to lose such a genuinely gifted musician, especially to such pointless circumstances.

This past Saturday, Miss Behavin' and I took in the Boston Tattoo Convention at the Boston Center for the Arts for the second year running, and boy did we ever enjoy ourselves!

This year I had planned on entering my sleeves, done by Scot Padgett of The Living Art Studio in Northampton, MA, in one of the Convention's many "tattoo contests." But due to the fact that they didn't want us to win, there wasn't a "large color" contest taking place on Saturday, even though it stated there was to be one on the website. Whatever. Next year it's on bitches!

So without a contest to enter there wasn't much left to do aside from check out the numerous amazing artists showcasing their work, both on skin and on other media including canvas and even skateboard. Hot. Two of the highlights of the convention were meeting "The Lizard Man" and watching the folks from Horiryu Tattoo in Japan get down.

The one and only living legend Jens was also in attendance. The 70+ year old fellow from Denmark contains a wealth of knowledge on life, love and the history of tattoos and tattooing. Oh and I cannot forget the day long antics of one "Evil Nick." The NECW superstar, and Living Art Studio regular, kept us in stitches as he scared and delighted patrons of the convention and citizens of Boston. Vince McMahon needs to sign dude. Seriously.

So peep the pictures and make sure you clear your calendar for next year's convention. Hopefully somehow Imageyenation and Urban Alternatives will be involved to make it that much better.

The Living Art Studio's Coleman, and Evil Nick.

Evil Nick's back done by Coleman.

Jens is my hero.

The Living Art Studio's Scot Padgett tries not to notice that this young lady isn't wearing panties.

I on the other hand always notice.

Evil Nick doesn't wear panties either...he wears a g-string.

One young lady couldn't help but stare at Evil's junk. I couldn't either.

Miss Behavin' likes her men with forked tongues.

In case you didn't know, our friend and former pseudo staff member Zahira shacked up with tattoo monkey Ray and moved her ass 6,000 freaking miles away to the golden shores of Hawaii! I didn't get to say goodbye before she left. And I haven't heard from her since. Until now that is...

Emcee Gift of Gab and DJ/producer Chief Xcel of Blackalicious have a new album, titled 'The Craft,' set for release September 27th on Epitaph Records. Gab himself has said no less of the disc than "It's my favorite of all of our albums, I think that it's our best album." And me? I'd be inclined to agree. Though the singles so far, "Rhythm Sticks" and "Your Move," have felt sorta lukewarm, the album as a whole is nothing but straight heat. Guests include George Clinton, Floetry, P.E.A.C.E. (of Freestyle Fellowship), and Quannum family members Lateef The Truth Speaker, Lyrics Born, Pigeon John, and the Lifesavas.

Our boys VURSATYLE and Jumbo the Garbageman of said Lifesavas even make an appearance in the brand new video clip for "Your Move," the second single so far from the album. And since you'd expect nothing less, you can check out this very same video right here and right now.

Real Media Hi

And whatever you do, don't forget to run out to your nearest record shop next Tuesday to cop 'The Craft' as soon as it hits the racks!

Whether it's proof that Sean Carter is indeed creating a new "underground" branch of Def Jam or not remains to be seen... But it looks as though the "talks" mentioned between him and The Roots were successful enough, as Roots drummer ?uestlove has confirmed that the hip-hop band has indeed signed to Def Jam and will be dropping an album on the label in a few short months.

"It's a legacy, it's historical," ?uest continued. "Of course, for the Roots, the most important thing for us is providing grade-quality, hip-hop connoisseur music. So we're very excited to have a new home. We're gonna maximize on it. [The new album] is 15 songs, it's gonna be our darkest, craziest record since [2002's] Phrenology, [1996's] Illadelph Halflife. This is a dirty, dirty record — a raw-sounding record."

Recording on the new LP, tentatively titled 'Game Theory,' is nearly complete, and the band is eyeing a release date in February or March. Guests so far include Mos Def, Talib Kweli and Saigon.

I have a feeling it's gonna fit though. And it would seem attorney's for former District Judge Donald Thompson must be afraid of just that as well, as they attempted to convince Judge C. Allen McCall not to allow a penis pump Thompson allegedly used while on the bench ( as well as other evidence and eye-witness testimony ) to be presented as state evidence.

McCall took other issues raised by Thompson's team under advisement, including testimony from a woman who prosecutors said had a sexual relationship with Thompson and the admission of 180 hours of courtroom tapes they said contained the whooshing sound of the penis pump in use.

That description in and of itself should call the authenticity of these tapes into question, as everybody knows these devices make a humming sound, not a wooshing sound.

A prolific singer, songwriter, and producer, Willie Hutch died of undisclosed causes in Houston, Texas this passed Tuesday.

The 59 year old industry veteran was best known for his work at Motown, which included producing a number of hits for the Jackson 5, as well as his work on the blaxploitation-era soundtracks for the films 'Foxy Brown' and 'The Mack,' the latter of which produced his most remembered hit, the heavily sampled "Brothers Gonna Work It Out."

Certainly one of many black performers from the '70s to influence modern popular music (by way of the vinyl-centric cultures of hip-hop, disco, and even house), Willie Hutch was also a direct influence on his nephew Big Hutch a.k.a. Cold 187um of seminal gangsta-rap group Above The Law, one of the architects of what would come to be known as the "g-funk" (or gangsta funk) sound.

Most recently Willie Hutch could be heard on the song "Treat Me," from German downtempo duo Boozoo Bajou's 'Dust My Broom' LP, which was released in August by Studio !K7.

As you remember from the Janet Jackson's boob fiasco, nudity and sex are the gravest threats to our American Way of Life. Thank GOD for Alberto Gonzales and his boys:

The new squad will divert eight agents, a supervisor and assorted support staff to gather evidence against "manufacturers and purveyors" of pornography -- not the kind exploiting children, but the kind that depicts, and is marketed to, consenting adults.

"I guess this means we've won the war on terror," said one exasperated FBI agent, speaking on the condition of anonymity because poking fun at headquarters is not regarded as career-enhancing. "We must not need any more resources for espionage."

It's a good thing we're fighting tyranny abroad, so we don't have to fight it at home.

Yes, today is International Talk Like A Pirate Day! The holiday was created by John Baur and Mark Summers, two average guys. It was an idea which started 10 years ago while playing racquetball. They decided to encouraging one another through pirate slang.

Right then and there they chose the date, September 20th, Summers ex-wife's birthday, to be Talk Like A Pirate Day. However it wasn't until they contacted columnist Dave Barry, who posted an article based on Summers and Baur's "Holiday" in the Miami Herald in 2002 that their holiday idea received more recognition.

With a little help from the article, the book 'Pirattitude!' written by Baur and Summers, along with word of mouth, the tradition or "Holiday" became recognized and celebrated!

So do as Cereffusion would and gather up your Seamen or Sealadies and shake yer Booty on the poopdeck!

Since I started my new job back in May Tuesday night has been the one night where I really don't have much to do. Sandwiched between two nights of radio shows, Tuesday has been the one night I try to get things done. Important things, such as grocery shopping, laundry, doing the dishes, downloading music and of course vegging out in front of the boob tube. Now for the past 4 months my boob tube viewing has been regulated to watching "De Jankees" as they try and salvage the season along with other programming that has failed to keep my attention. I can't even remember what I end up watching...maybe it's one of those tattoo shows? Perhaps 'That's So Raven?' 'CNN Headline News?' A random MTV show about real people doing real things in real time? I dunno. Whatever it was pales in comparison with what this Tuesday night has to offer. That is because tonight 'My Name Is Earl' is premiering on NBC at 9/8c.

I have no clue how long this show is actually going to run for...well hopefully at least a few weeks before they change it's time slot 6 times and then put it up against that beast of a show 'My Two Dads' or is it '3 Men and A Baby?' No? Well, whatever that show is with Chuck Sheen, Ducky and that lil fat kid from 'See Spot Run.' Yeah that one. It'll lose out to that beauty. I digress.

'My Name Is Earl' stars one of my favorite people in the universe, Mr. Jason Lee. Here's a few reasons why:

- He's an ex pro skater
- Brodie Bruce/Banky Edwards
- Stillwater
- Beard
- His son's name is Pilot Inspektor

As if I didn't need any more reasons to watch, the cast of 'My Name Is Earl' also includes Ethan Suplee aka "the fat guy" in: 'Remember The Titans,' 'Blow' and 'Roadtrip.' He was also the "fat guy" who is not named Kevin Smith in all those Kevin Smith films.

But wait.

The cast also includes the friggin' OFFICE MAX GUY! Are you kidding me!!!???!!! No. That is really him.

Oh and to round out the cast two very sexy ladies were called upon to lend thier services. One Jamie Pressly and my new favorite sexy lady Nadine Velazquez.

So do your self a favor and tune in tonight. Don't worry there will be another 'CSI' or 'Law & Order' on tomorrow.

No, he is not George Bluth Sr.!

It’s been a week since my last entry. I can explain. Last Thursday, I was counting ants in the prison yard and it was a scorcher but I remember, I started killing the ants with my feet, yelling “Die you little black bastards, die!” I got stabbed – a whole lot.

They've got the wrong twin!

Well, not really, but that's basically what Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf meant when he said "if you want to go abroad and get a visa for Canada or citizenship and be a millionaire, get yourself raped." And you can bet your sweet, sweet ass that Pakistani Women's groups, civil-rights activists and protesters are none-too-happy about the whole thing.

In Karachi on Friday, 19 rights and advocacy groups vented their anger at the remarks, holding banners such as: "Who wants to be a millionaire - just get raped!"

Sumar Mallah, a fisherman whose five-year-old daughter was raped and killed on 5 September, was at the rally.

Mr Mallah said: "The police and the rapists have been insisting that I accept money and forget about my daughter. I will never settle for money. I want justice."

Perhaps Musharraf and Barbra Bush can get together to front a new human-rights campaign that will better the lives of poor people and women by catastrophically destroying everything they own and then raping them?

In the endzone...with "The King."

(I swear I didn't mean to make that sound perverted. Honest.)

We've been loving these commercials with "The King" for a minute now and the new ones that have him making great plays on the football field are just brilliant. So it's only right that I bring these to you on Sunday as the second week of the NFL season kicks off. Enjoy.

Score with "The King" once!

Score with "The King" twice!

Last month the Urban Alternatives massive took it to the streets once again. And much like the last time that we rolled deep we checked out Tableek. But this go round he brought his mates Roddy Rod and H-Bomb to perform as Maspyke, and me and DJ Nature rocked the decks for a quick minute prior to the show for the few souls who appreciate good music. Anyway, here's the pics we took to document the evening:

MASPYKE! The album 'Static' will be in stores next week! Cop this shit.

I believe I was playing the Tom Tom Club in this pic.

Hollywood Henderson's dad doesn't work for this Maspyke.

Keter and Ex-Imageyenation blogger and go-go dancer Dafna like to cuddle during hip hop shows.

I cross my legs like my Uncle Frank. So does my brother. Miss Behavin' crosses her legs because she's a lady. Like the kind Tom Jones sings about.

And once again, a lesson to all you kids out there since some fools didn't pay attention last time:

Sandals = Not Hip Hop

Sandals with socks = NOT HIP HOP

Adidas Rod Laver's = Hip Hop

Look out for more tomfoolery and shenanigans from the Urban Alternatives crew at an establishment near you!

A New Jersey based bio-terror research lab is reporting that at least three mice infected with a deadly strain of Plague have gone missing from the facility and have been unaccounted for for approximately two weeks.

Officials discovered two weeks ago a failure to account for three of 24 mice that had been injected with a bacterium that causes various forms of the plague, including bubonic plague, inside the high-security facility located in the middle of the city of Newark.

The injections were part of an experiment testing potential treatments for the plague, according to The Star-Ledger of Newark, which first reported the story in today's editions.

The discovery that three of the mice were missing led to a full investigation by the FBI Joint Terror Task Force, and an ongoing investigation into the lab's safeguards by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, federal sources said.

One employee of the lab was fired nearly two weeks ago.

So let's see... Oppressive socio-economic conditions? Check. Big-ass flood? Check. Plague on the loose? Check. Now all we need is fire and brimstone falling from the sky and we'll have a full scale Armageddon on our hands!

NEW PORNOGRAPHERS

'Twin Cinema'

Matador Records

If you haven't bought this album yet - then shut your face. This album is loaded with melodic, upbeat, beautiful rock music and is already in contention to become a future classic record. Overall - stunning. It's one of those albums that'll become a part of your life, never staying for too long on your CD Shelf. -- 97.5/100.

NOBODY

'And Everything Else'

Plug Research

You may remember Nobody as one of the main producers on Ellay Khule's recent album 'Califormula,' but this album is musically different and evokes a totally new vibe. It's essentially an instrumental record in the DJ Rupture "everything-goes-all-sorts-of-styles" vein, with influences ranging from hiphop, to downtempo, to psychadelic, and even rock. The quality of the beats is exceptional and gritty, and travel the spectrum of emotion and energy. Definitely for downtempo heads and fans of Bully Records and Diplo. -- 80/100.

BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE

'Feelgood Lost'

Arts & Crafts

Man. I put this album in last Saturday and just drove around in one of those introspective, sad moods where you just think about lost friendships, and missed opportunities, and all those god-damned regrets and shit. Yeah. Good music - but perfect for those gloomy indie kids who always have song lyrics as their name on MySpace. You know who you are. You already own this CD. Rerelease out now. -- 69/100.

Our close personal friend Emeyesi was supposed to post about this video clip from Canadian hip-hop superstar K-Os for his track "Man I Used To Be" ( which happens to be my personal favorite track from last year's 'Joyful Rebellion' disc ) a long fuckin' time ago. Unfortunately, he ( like most of the people on the Imageyenation "staff" not named "El Keter ben Tzadik" ) is a shiftless slack-ass, so he never got around to actually doing it. And that is why I am posting it now!

Like his previous videos, this one features a bunch of fresh dance footage from various b-boys throughout. Especially eye-catching is a street-scene featuring a dope "confrontation" between two dancers portraying a homelass cat and a suited-up businessman. It's top quality in both concept and execution, and it brings the now ubiquitous b-boy presence in his vidoes out of the realm of a mere showcase for the dancer's skills and actually incorporates it into the "story" being told by the visuals.

Pontificating aside, it was a cool clip when Emeyesi said he was gonna post about, and it's a cool clip now, so watch it!

When the storm remains distant
We are heroes of complacency
Puffed chest and swollen pride
We hate ourselves in ways
Only the deepest love could recognize

When the storm remains distant
There is no such thing as us
There is only dollar and dynamite
Gunpowder and fiery God
The churches are filled with women and children
The men pray only in case of emergency
We worship a foreign truth
And only death will stamp our passport

When the storm remains distant
There is no afterlife
Most die unborn
Most live unloved
Disappointment takes on new names and costumes
The future is stillborn and disfigured
The womb becomes an airtight safe
Darkness swallows darkness

When the storm remains distant
Nothing is as is
Songs are opiates
Sleep is the burial ground of dreams
Happiness is a lie
Sex is where love is not

When the storm remains distant
We are unreminded and dare to forget
School is a fashion show
Violence is comfort food
Family is nothing
And nothing is real

When the storm remains distant
Niggas are free to be Niggas
Niggers, Black, you name it

Anything but one thing
Everything but nothing
Even with a shitload of platinum
Wrapped around his neck
Like a southern tree gone petrified
Screw face pearly gate-mouth
Tangled nectar of the stars

When the storm remains distant
Stars are retired drug dealers nicknamed God
Rapists with pretty voices
And anyone but anyone who shines

When the storm remains distant
The sun is flawless in its magnitude
The heavens reflect breath of angels
The people bask in themselves
The storm is forgotten

When the storm is forgotten
The waters, 'though they rise,
Fail to threaten
The people march backwards
from ashes to ashen,
Whiplash, car crash, Cash Money,
Some Niggas eat diamonds for breakfast
Pursue cheap labor, Enslave God

When the storm is forgotten
Poets are meteorologists
Behold, the farmers almanac
The sheep wake up and congregate
The litany begins

When the storm is forgotten
The struggle ends

May the storm never be forgotten.

In light of BET's refusal to play Little Brother's "Lovin' It" video for being "too intelligent," one of the heads on the Justus League message boards has started a campaign to petition BET to discontinue it's practice of banning anything but the most commercial, and oftentimes most ignorant, of hip-hop videos from it's programs.

We, the Hip Hop and Black community, are asking that BET and its staff, reconsider the videos that you play on your network. As, of recent, a video titled "Lovin' It" by a group that goes by the name of Little Brother signed to record label, Atlantic Records, was banned from your network because it was labeled "too intelligent" by your program director. If "Lovin' It" is too intelligent, then what should we be teaching the black youth? Supposedly, your network would rather teach black males to swipe credit cards in between a black woman's buttocks as depicted in Nelly's "Tip Drill" which is a video that was featured in heavy rotation on your television program titled "Uncut". We are disgusted and appalled at your decision to stop the airing of such videos as Little Brother's video "Lovin' It", depriving the black people and Hip Hop community of a balance in what type of music is out there. We hope BET and your staff reconsider your decision in the airing of Little Brother's "Lovin It". Thank you for your time!

If you're even remotely concerned that such backwards standards are being applied by an entertainment network that supposedly caters to an ethnic minority that has historically been denied educational opportunities due to institutionalized racism then feel free to view, and sign, the petition online.

We need more sports related bloggings. Since Cereffusion's circus act, otherwise known as the Los Angeles...wait no...Oakland Raiders (or Raideres) won't be making much noise this season I'll take it upon myself to champion the champions this NFL season.

I've been telling Mr. Cereffusion that his Raiders were gonna get punched in the face since early this spring when the schedules came out and like usual I was right. Stick to your make believe football games son.

The Patriots dominated the game for the most part aside from a couple "Madden" plays that a semi-sober Kerry Collins tossed up. It happens.

I was impressed with the offense at times...and then baffled at some of the playcalling that went on. The O-line protection was magnificent, giving Brady a ridiculous amount of time to deliver his passes. So much for the rumored arm troubles. Defensively they were stout when they needed to be. Quite a bit of miscommunication though in the secondary, but that will be mended in time.

Next week: @ Carolina

P.S. Nice walker Al. Get your pasty ass up in your box before you get hurt.

Lately, every time I leave my house to go out to a "night-spot" I've been confronted with a gaggle of light-skinned black dudes rocking locks, little scruffy beards, and carribean influenced bohemian fashions. And I must admit, I'm totally convinced that this sudden proliferation of Rasta-chic poseurs is in fact a direct result of the new-found popularity of that youngest of Robert Nesta's musically inclined progeny, Damian Marley, and his enormous hit "Welcome To Jamrock."

The track has been bubbling for a long while now, but recent months have seen it totally blowing up on radio and video. Nobody's been more surprised at it's success as me. Though I was immediately taken by the tune the first time I heard it, and championed it at every opportunity, I just didn't think that America, as infatuated as it is with glitzy-rap, and r&b, and the sterile, computerized riddims of modern commercial dancehall, would go for a slower, tougher, dirtier, roots influenced reggae tune such as "Jamrock." Boy was I wrong! And I couldn't be happier, since "Welcome To Jamrock" is hands down one of the toughest reggae tunes I've heard in damn near a decade, and I'm almost always happy when something I dig so much breaks through to the wider consciousness.

I'm still not too happy about all these wannabe mini-Marley's taking up stool space every time I go to the damn club, but that's neither here nor there.

What is both here and there though is the impending release of Marley's full-length album, titled ( not surprisingly ) 'Welcome To Jamrock,' September 13th, on Universal Records. For a sneak-peek ( or listen, as it were ) at the album check out the 'Welcome To Jamrock' media player, which features five full length audio tracks, the full "Welcome To Jamrock" video, and some other goodies.

Or, if you're interested in hearing what young Mr. Marley has to say for himself, you can watch "A Private Conversation with Damian Marley," a streaming Windows Media video documentary/interview where he discusses the meaning behind the name "Jamrock," his album, his hit tune, his family, his place in music, and more.

The popular, user-edited, real-time web encyclopedia Wikipedia is fast eclipsing sites like Google, Yahoo!, the BBC, and Dictionary.com as web-surfers first choice for up-to-date news and factual references.

Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia assembled in realtime, has reportedly experienced a 154 per cent hike in traffic during the last year, according to internet traffic watchers at Hitwise.

The Wiki-fiddlers' big-book o' facts appears to be benefiting from a happy coincidence of a lot of big-headline news combined with the apparent inability of so-called traditional news channels - both online and off-line - to satiate surfers' need for reference material. A high ranking in Google, boosted by the replication of the Wikipedia material, hasn't harmed the project either.

I personally blame Cereffusion for this spike in hits to the site, as his habit of spending the late-night hours searching the "Wiki" for entries about old-school WWF wrestlers has only gotten worse, and worse.

Taken from the http://walken2008.com campaign website...
It's not too early to be thinking about the future of this country and who's going to lead it. Election after election we're given the "choice" between two unappealing candidates and have no choice but to vote for the one we dislike less. But now, that's about to change.

Stepping up to the forefront of politics is a new type of leader, motivated by his love for his country, not special interest groups. His distinct image and captivating voice you already know, and now it's your chance to make him the leader of the people, for the people, by the people. That's right... Christopher Walken is running for President.

Now, at this early stage of the campaign, is when the grass-roots voters like us can really influence the candidates we'll see in the elections. So take a few minutes to visit the Walken 2008 Home Page at http://www.walken2008.com, read about the man and his ideas, and send them a message of your support. This is how the system should work, and now's your chance to have your voice. Don't let it slip away!
I mean, he puts his pants on like everybody else, one leg at a time, except when his pants are on... he makes gold records!

That's just the type of guy I want running my country!

Dailykos has all the info you'll need on Dick Cheney's run-in with a regular-old citizen down in Mississippi today.

In Mississippi, during a press conference, after telling the press that what needs to be done, gets done. A resident walked up to the gaggle and said this:

"Go fuck yourself, Mr. Cheney!! Go fuck yourself!!!

Cheney looked pissed. Really pissed.

Here's the video courtesy of Crooks & Liars.

But the funniest part of all this belong to the folks at CNN:

Cafferty: "Didn't he say that to Patrick Leahy on the Senate floor?"

Blitzer: "Yes."

C: "So how could this have been the first time he heard it?"

B: "First time he heard it in this area."

C: "I'm sure it won't be the last."

With the release of his sophomore full-length 'Still Means Something' still a ways off, Fort Wayne, Indiana's favorite bearded emcee Sankofa is doing everything he can to keep his "buzz" strong. To that end, an album sampler is already floating around the web ( thanks in no small part to my posting it a few weeks back ) and people are finally starting to realize that this guy is dope, and not just because he dresses up as a ninja and wears bizarre headwear in his promo photos either. The fact of the matter is the dude is just plain dope, and he's incredibly prolific. Which is something I learned through numerous collabortive efforts ( which I'm sure you will hear... someday ), and which you are about to learn by way of yet another post featuring new and exclusive promotional audio!

Not content with letting the snippet sampler speak for itself, dude got his hands on an old Nine instrumental ( "We Play for Keeps" from the 'Cloud Nine' LP ), laced it with an ill "freestyle," and threw in a little promotional hyperbole for the forthcoming 'Still Means Something' for good measure. The result is sheer lyrical insanity. And I suggest you give it a listen right the duece now!

Sankofa "We Play For Keeps Freestyle"

Real Audio

When you're done listening, pick your jaw up off the floor, visit his website and try to get yourself one of the dope "logoman" t-shirt's he recently had printed. That way you'll look cool like me ( since I already have one of the shirts... duh ) while you're waiting for 'Still Means Something' to drop.

While touring the site of relief efforts at Houston's Astrodome with former President Bill Clinton, and her husband, former President George Bush, former first lady Barbara Bush made herself "a funny" at the expense of the thousands of poor, homeless hurricane victims currently housed there during a brief National Public Radio interview.
In a segment at the top of the show on the surge of evacuees to the Texas city, Barbara Bush said: "Almost everyone I’ve talked to says we're going to move to Houston."

Then she added: "What I’m hearing is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality.

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this (she chuckles slightly)--this is working very well for them."
The folks over at The Drudge Report have a downloadble audio clip of the quote in question, so you can have a good ol' "white priveledge" chuckle right along with Babs.

Though I'm sure a mix like this would have been perfect to listen to last night or earlier today when nothing else was on television besides the Jerry Lewis telethon, my motto remains "better late than never."

The mix in question is a blend of hip-hop, soul, jazzy flavors, and broken-beat shit called "Houston We Got A Solution," and it comes courtesy of Houston, Texas based ( by way of Philly and the planet of Brooklyn ) producer/emcee Jneiro Jarel.

The mix, which is available as a streaming MP3, or a downloadable MP3 ( right click and "save as" ), features material from Build An Ark, Rich Medina, Vinia Mojica, Count Bass D, Paul Wall, and a bunch of Jneiro exclusives.

But since the tracklist sort of speaks for itself, just go ahead and take a peek at it.

Jneiro Jarel 'Houston We Got A Solution' tracklist:

1. Build An Ark Remixes "Vibe of The Tribe (Jneiro Jarel Remix)" (Plug Research)

2. Build An Ark Remixes "You've Gotta Have Freedom (J. Rocc Remix)" (Plug Research)

3. Label Who? Presents: Beat Journey "Brazilliant Thought" (Label Who)

4. Shape of Broad Minds "AKA Mr. Mole" (Label Who/Unreleased)

5. Recloose "Dust (Rocque Wun Mix Produced By Jneiro Jarel) (PeaceFrog)

6. Rich Medina "I Can't Hold Back No More feat. Sy Smith" (Kindred Spirits US)

7. Jneiro Jarel "Big Bounce Theory Part 2 Ffeat. Vinia Mojica" (Ropeadope/Kindred Spirits)

8. Shape of Broad Minds "Dark Surroundings" (Label Who/Unreleased)

So you see, even if you sat bored stiff watching a fat Jew ( not me ) ask you for cash all day, or had nothing fresh to pump on the system at your Labor Day barbeque, it's still a betterment to your life to know that this mix exists at all, even if an earlier discovery of that fact could have proved more beneficial.

Leave it up to the Germans to deliver the most rockin'-est rendition of "The Final Countdown" ever recorded.

And when I say "ever," I mean EVAR!!!!!!111111

I promise, they'll make you forget that Europe even existed!

New Jersey based emcee Dave Ghetto came on the scene back in 1998 ( under the name AZ-IZ ) as a member of the Fondle 'Em Records crew Nuthouse. Since then he's released a number of projects, collaborating with producer Chops of the Mountain Brothers and others, as well as a few solo singles. After much delay, his debut full-length, titled 'Lovelife?,' which features production from J Dilla, DJ Spinna, ILLmind, Tony Galvin, Erik Rico, Khrysis, and Square4, is finally set for release towards the end of October on Counterflow Records!

A 'Lovelife?' sampler MP3 is available for download courtesy of the label, which you can right click and "save as" to download.

Dave Ghetto "Lovelife? Sampler" [MP3]

The first single is the 9th Wonder produced "Hey Young World Part 2" featuring guest vocals from femcee Mystic, and singing courtesy of Little Brother member Phonte. And it also happens to be available as a downloadble MP3 as well ( the same downloading rules apply )!

Dave Ghetto feat. Mystic & Phonte "Hey Young World Part 2" [MP3]

But that's not all! Apparently DG and his label are posessed by the spirit of generosity, because they're offering two other album cuts, the ILLMind produced "Day In And Day Out," and the Square4 produced "Spread The Light," up for download too!
