If his upcoming full-length 'Be' keeps up the quality and intensity he's been exhibiting lately on tracks like this, "The Food," his turn on De La Soul's "My Life" and "Claimin' Respect" with Boulevard Connection then we just might have to induct this cat into the "real man talk" hall of fame!

More media player madness... this time courtesy of DJ Z-Trip.

As one of the better known -- and earliest -- proponents of the "mash-up" ( he was doing it before it became the trendy thing to do ), and one of hip-hop's premier live turntablists, you should already know who Z-Trip is. But what you may not know is that he's got an album dropping on April 26th. Titled 'Shifting Gears' the record features guest performances from a whole host of artists including Chuck D, Whipper Whip, Lyrics Born, Soup of Jurassic 5, Aceyalone, Supernatural, Murs, Busdriver, Mystic and Chester Bennington, in addition to the scratch heavy instrumental joints you might expect from a turntablist like Z-Trip.

I'm expecting the single to make the rounds of the dj world and so find it's way into my own hands in a hot minute myself. And the album doesn't sound like it'll be half bad at all either.

But feel free to check the man and his music out for yourself.

First there's a handfull of tracks from the album in this nifty Flash based Z-Trip media player, including joints with Soup, Luke Sick and Supernatural & Murs.

And then there's a neat little video clip of Z-Trip performing live with... is that Beck?

Now where can I find that new Beck record?

I'm not quite sure what I think of this guy or his music. I mean, part of me thinks this is sort of the future of popular music. People who write, perform, produce and record their own music, music that sort of blurs genre lines but is still basically that same major label bubblegum that the people love. So you see, I'm just not sure... so I'm gonna let him speak for himself, and then I'll let you decide what you think.

"I describe my music as a person who has a lot of CD’s and records and tapes of different genres of music; who is kind of bored by most music; who goes to listen to something and doesn’t find it after going through every CD and makes music that he wants to listen to but can’t find." - Chris Glover

He's got a couple tracks up in a fancy little Flash player thingy if you feel like checking him out. And if you like what you hear you should note that Apple's iTunes Discovery Download will giving away downloads of his "Stand On Your Seat" for free March 8th through 14th.

Splaining the aliases:
Why do you have so many characters? Doom is confusing enough, but you also have Geedorah, Vik and Zev.

I look at it like this. I'm an author, it just so happens what I write is in rhythmic form, and it's over music. So for me to get different points across, just like an author would in a novel, I come with different characters. Now that author is writing from each character's point of view, but he's not the particular character. In hip-hop it's the same thing. We get kinda confused, I think we limit ourselves with the whole "I'm the guy" kind of thing. Like I-this, You-that. In hip-hop you're the guy. It's too much responsibility - you don't want to be that guy. The Villain is a guy that transcends me personally - he can do shit that I can't do. So I'm like, if hip-hop is all about bragging and boasting, then I'm going to make the illest character - he can brag about all kinds of shit. Like why not? It's all your imagination? Go as far as you want.

So in that, I'm like okay, if that's the case, then I can make multiple characters, and they can even have conflicting views, so you get around the whole thing of people trying to categorize you, a typecast-kinda thing, where if you change your mind. We're growing up as all this is going on - we're going to change our minds. The public looks at that and is like, Oh he's contradicting himself. When you got multiple characters you never contradict yourself. Have another character come with another point of view.

Oh my head:
An Italian DJ has been fined a record 1.4 million euros ($1.8 million) for using thousands of pirate music files in a nightclub near Rome, police said on Wednesday.

Police in the town of Rieti, near Rome, said they raided a popular nightclub earlier this week as part of a crackdown on piracy and seized 500 illegally copied music videos and more than 2,000 MP3 music files.

Police said the files belonged to a "well-known" Italian DJ.

"For the MP3 files, which were kept on the DJ's personal computer, the DJ has received a fine of 1.4 million euros," Rieti finance police said in a statement.

...born Lamont Coleman, he was an incredible Harlem bred lyricist.

Big L "Put It On"

Ayyo, you betta flee hops, or get your head flown three blocks
L keep rapper's hearts pumpin' like Reeboks
And every year I gain clout and my name sprouts
Some brothers'd still be virgins if crack never came out
I got the wild style, always been a foul child
My guns go boom-boom, and your guns go pow-pow
I'm known to have a hottie open, I keep the shottie smokin'
Front and get half the bones in your body broken
And when it comes to gettin' nookie I'm not a rookie
I got girls that make that chick Toni Braxton look like Whoopie
I run with sturdy clicks I'm never hittin dirty chicks
Got thirty-five bodies, buddy, don't make it thirty-six
Step to this you're good as gone, word is bond
I leave mics torn when I put it on

Nobody can take nuttin' from Big L but a loss chief
The last punk who fronted got a mouth full of false teeth
I'm known to gas a hottie and blast the shottie
Got more cash than Gotti -- you don't know? -- you betta ask somebody
Big L is a crazy brother, and I'm a lady lover
A smooth kid that'll run up in your baby mother
I push a slick Benz, I'm known to hit skinz
And get ends and commit sins with sick friends
Cause I'm a money getter, also a honey hitter
You think you nice as me? Ha-ha, you's a funny nigga
I flows, so one of my shows, wouldn't be clever to miss
I'm leavin' competitors pissed
To tell you the truth, it gets no better than this
I'm catchin wreck to the break of dawn
And it's on, yo it's a must that I put it on

I drink Moet not Beck's beer, I stay dressed in slick gear
Peace to my homies in the gangsta lean, I see you when I get there
And it's a fact I keep a gat in my arm reach
I charm freaks and bomb geeks from here to Palm Beach
I'm puttin' rappers in the wheelchair, Big L is the villain
you still fear, cause I be hangin' it hard and my shit is for real here
If you battle L you picked the wrong head
I smash mics like cornbread, you can't kill me I was born dead
And I'm known to pull steel trigs and kill pigs
I run with ill kids and real nigs who peel wigs
My raps is steady slammin', I keep a heavy cannon
It's a new sherriff in town, and it ain't Reggie Hammond
Peace to my peoples, the Children of the Corn
Cause we put it on, adios, ghost I'm gone...

He passed away, the victim of gun violence, on this day, February 15th, 1999.

...well, kinda.

I just got an e-mail from MC Lars about his new video for "Signing Emo." Apparently both MTV and the Fuse network have decided not to play it... paraphrasing both, they say that "it doesn't fit into anything that we do." So, basically, it's not a reality show or mainstreamo video.

If you think this is silly or vulgar, he asks that you feel free to reach out to either channel and request it.

You can make a difference.

First you can go to www.fuse.tv, click "tv shows," select "dedicate live" and "suggest a video." Suggest "Signing Emo" by MC Lars... duh. Feel free to dedicate the video to whomever you want, even if it's the people who pick videos at Fuse.

Then you can do the same at MTV by visiting www.mtv.com/onair/trl/vote/ where, once again, you should vote for "Signing Emo" by none other than MC Lars. The funniest thing about MTV's unwillingness to play this video is the fact that they actually ran a feature story about the video... the video they wont ever play.

In the meantime you might as well watch the video where you actually can though... and that's right here champ!

MC Lars "Signing Emo"

And if you're from the region check Lars out live on March 14th in New York, NY at Mercury Lounge, on April 7th in Boston, MA at Avalon, on April 8th in Portland, ME at The Station, on April 9th in Clifton Park, NY at Northern Lights and on April 10th in Hartford, CT at Webster Theatre.

We'll be at at least one of these shows, and you should be too.

Just in case you happen to be one of the few people out there like me who isn't watching the Super Bowl right now, here's some cool new viewing material.

First we've got a video for emcee, producer and multi-instrumentalist Count Bass D's recent 10'' vinyl single "Down Easy" featuring his soul inflected beats and stylized crooning techniques...

Then we've got a couple of new clips from The Streets. The last time I posted links to one of Mike Skinner's videos it resulted in a venomous hate-post on our message board... but fuck it... we like The Streets... and if you don't then fuck you...
